Workshop on Artificial Superlattices. October 30-31, 1980 at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA

Description: The program and 24 abstracts are given. The abstracts are divided into the following categories: structure and elastic properties, transport and electronic properties, magnetism and superconductivity, and phonons. The engineering of novel materials using sophisticated preparation techniques has received considerable attention in recent years. This interest has been mainly stimulated by recent developments in preparation techniques such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Thermal Vapor Deposition and Spu… more

Chemical reaction rates using the semiclassical Van-Vleck initialvalue representation

Description: A semiclassical IVR formulation using the Van-Vleck propagator has been used to calculate the flux correlation function and thereby reaction rate constants. This Van-Vleck formulation of the flux-flux correlation function is computationally as simple as the classical Wigner model. However unlike the latter, it has the ability to capture quantum interference/coherence effects. Classical trajectories are evolved starting from the dividing surface that separates reactants and products, and are evo… more

Proceedings of Cryocooler Conference: 1984

Description: Abstract: This document contains the proceedings of the Third Cryocooler Conference, held at the National Bureau of Standards, Boulder, CO, on Sept. 17-18, 1984. About 140 people from 10 countries attended the conference and represented industry, government, and academia. A total of 26 papers were presented orally at the conference and all appear in written form in this document. The emphasis in this conference was on small cryocoolers in the temperature range of 4 - 80 K. Mechanical and non-me… more

Efficient Estimators for Quantum Instanton Evaluation of theKinetic Isotope Effects: Application to the Intramolecular HydrogenTransfer in Pentadiene

Description: The quantum instanton approximation is used to compute kinetic isotope effects for intramolecular hydrogen transfer in cis-1,3-pentadiene. Due to the importance of skeleton motions, this system with 13 atoms is a simple prototype for hydrogen transfer in enzymatic reactions. The calculation is carried out using thermodynamic integration with respect to the mass of the isotopes and a path integral Monte Carlo evaluation of relevant thermodynamic quantities. Efficient 'virial' estimators are deri… more

Electronic and Optical Properties of Energetic Particle-IrradiatedIn-rich InGaN

Description: We have carried out a systematic study of the effects of irradiation on the electronic and optical properties of InGaN alloys over the entire composition range. High energy electrons, protons, and {sup 4}He{sup +} were used to produce displacement damage doses (D{sub d}) spanning over five orders of magnitude. The free electron concentrations in InN and In-rich InGaN increase with D{sub d} and finally saturate after a sufficiently high D{sub d}. The saturation of carrier density is attributed t… more

Technical Summary Report for Basic Research in Thermionic Energy Conversion: 1 December 1970 to 30 November 1971

Description: Abstract: This report presents some of the results of the past year's work in a continuing study of thermionic converters. It is a study of the basic processes in thermionic diodes, and the application of this basic information to the achievement of practical thermionic energy conversion.

A Simple mechanical Calculator for Solving Transmission Line Equations

Description: A simple mechanical calculator has been developed for solving the transmission line equations when the characteristic impedance is a variable. The speed of computation is some two orders of magnitude faster than analytical methods. The theoretical basis is described and also the way in which it can be used. Some representative problems, which have benefited by us of the calculator, are discussed.

An Experiment on the Limits of Quantum Electro-Dynamics

Description: The limitations of previously performed or suggested electrodynamic cutoff experiments are reviewed, and an electron-electron scattering experiment to be performed with storage rings to investigate further the limits of the validity of quantum electrodynamics is described. The foreseen experimental problems are discussed, and the results of the associated calculations are given. The parameters and status of the equipment are summarized. (D.C.W.)

Linearized Semiclassical Initial Value Time Correlation FunctionsUsing the Thermal Gaussian Approximation: Applications to Condensed PhaseSystems

Description: The linearized approximation to the semiclassical initial value representation (LSC-IVR) has been used together with the thermal Gaussian approximation (TGA) (TGA/LSC-IVR) to simulate quantum dynamical effects in realistic models of two condensed phase systems. This represents the first study of dynamical properties of the Ne13 Lennard-Jones (LJ) cluster in its liquid-solid phase transition region (temperature from 4 K to 14 K). Calculation of the force autocorrelation function shows considerab… more
