Identification and cleavage of breakable single bonds by selective oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis. Quarterly report No. 12, June 1-September 30, 1981

Description: We assume that bituminous coal consists mostly of an aggregate of condensed aromatic and aliphatic rings, connected and made insoluble (but swellable) by crosslinks containing single bonds. The objective of this project is to determine the proportions of the various kinds of connecting links and how they can best be broken - in other words, to determine the structure of bituminous coal, with emphasis on the crosslinks and breakable single bonds. The program began with an investigation of the st… more

These compounds are thought to be representative of sulfur containing molecules in coal. The program is divided into three tasks, the first of which is a project work plan that we have already submitted. Our experimental work duri… more

Novel catalytic methods for heteroatom removal in coal liquids upgrading. Quarterly report No. 3, March 1, 1983-June 1, 1984

Description: The goal of this project is to optimize the reaction conditions for upgrading coal liquids. Our results for this quarter are summarized: Last quarter we found that H/sub 2/S aids in the HDN process. During this quarter, we have undertaken an H/sub 2/S concentration study on this reaction and found a direct correlation between the amount of added H/sub 2/S and the reduction in nitrogen content. For comparison, we also used H/sub 2/O and Na/sub 2/S as additives; however, neither appears to be as … more

Dissolving coal at moderate temperatures and pressures. Final report, August 20, 1982-September 30, 1984. [Benzylamine]

Description: The main objectives of this research were to make Illinois No. 6 coal liquid or soluble with inexpensive reagents (e.g., solvolysis with methanol and acids), without high pressure equipment, and to see if our soluble products would be more reactive than whole coal in liquefaction processes. These efforts are unpromising. However, efforts to make coal soluble by oxidation with nitric acid gave encouraging results. When Illinois No. 6 and Wyodak coals were allowed to stand in sunlight for 282 day… more

Low severity conversion of activated coal

Description: The results suggest that coal contains regions with structural components significantly reactive under the hydrothermal environment. Although the specific mechanism for this process remains to be developed, this activity is reminiscent of findings in studies of accelerated maturation of oil shale, where hydrothermal treatment (hydrous pyrolysis) leads to the production of petroleum hydrocarbons. In line with what has been seen in the oil shale work, the pretreatment-generated hydrocarbons and p… more

Highly dispersed catalysts for coal liquefaction. Quarterly report No. 9, August 23, 1993--November 22, 1993

Description: We analyzed two sets of liquefaction experiments, one involved the liquefaction of Black Thunder Coal with the corresponding recycle vehicle, and the second set of liquefaction runs involved the liquefaction of Argonne North Dakota Lignite. We compared coal conversions of Black Thunder coal and recycle solvent using Fe(CO){sub 5} and carbon monoxide/hydrogen atmospheres and a MolyVanL molybdenum catalyst under a hydrogen atmosphere. We also continued our investigation of the effect of water on … more

Novel catalysts for methane activation. Quarterly report No. 5, October 1, 1993--December 31, 1993

Description: The objectives of this project are to test novel fullerene based catalysts for application in methane activation. During this period we investigated a novel method of activating carbon soot which was recently reported in literature. In this method, the soot is treated with carbon dioxide at temperatures of 850{degrees}C to give a microporous carbon with a high surface area. We repeated this activation step and found that the BET surface areas increased from approximately 125 m{sup 2}/g to over … more

Exploratory coprocessing research

Description: The objectives of this quarter's work were to conduct coprocessing experiments in our new microreactor system, where the reactors are agitated by an electric reciprocating saw. Since Wyodak coal was shown to be more susceptible to pretreatment in the larger, 300-mL autoclaves, we decided to begin with this coal. Coprocessing experiments were conducted using pretreatments at 250{degrees}C and at 350{degrees}C, where a ratio of 1 part coal and 2 parts Maya ATB and 1200 psig of hydrogen was heated… more
