Liquid Metal Engineering Center (LMEC) annual technical progress report, January-December 1975

Description: During operation of the prototype FFTF sodium pump, it is necessary to know the position of the pump shaft relative to the sodium-lubricated hydrostatic bearing journals. Performance of the Kaman proximity measurement system was known to be affected by the type of media between the gap to be measured. Since Kaman Sciences Corp. did not have liquid sodium testing capabilities, LMEC was requested to evaluate a spare prototype system. Determination of the sodium performance characteristics of the … more

Improvements in rotary seals for downhole motors in geothermal applications

Description: The major limitation of downhole mud motors for geothermal well drilling as well as straighthole and oil well drilling is the bearing section. Reduced bearing life has been a direct result of the inability to seal lubricant in the bearing section. A reliable rotary seal is needed to extend bearing life and to allow high pressure drops across the drill bit for improved bottomhole cleaning and increased drilling rate. The endurance of high temperature rotary seal candidates is being measured in a… more

Reactor cover system improvements. Final report FY 1978. [Seal, bearing, support, deck, vessel support]

Description: The effort in the reactor cover study area resulted in design recommendations for the vessel support, the deck, and the bearing and seals. Sixteen configurations of bearings and seals were examined as part of this study. The selected concepts use a double inflatable seal plus a sodium dip seal. Six different deck configurations were considered as part of this study. The most attractive of these concepts is the conical deck. Five different vessel support concepts were considered. Of these, the U… more

Geothermal Well Technology Program

Description: The high cost of drilling and completing geothermal wells is an impediment to the development of geothermal energy resources. Technological deficiencies in rotary drilling techniques are evidenced when drilling geothermal wells. The Division of Geothermal Energy (DGE) of the U.S. Department of Energy has initiated a program aimed at developing new drilling and completion techniques for geothermal wells. The goals of this program are to reduce well costs by 25% by 1982 and by 50% by 1986. An ove… more

Annual report on the project to design and experimentally test an improved geothermal drill bit

Description: Progress is reported in a research and development program to design, build, and test an improved geothermal drill bit. The major tasks of the Phase I effort are entitled: failure mechanisms of existing bits; new steels and new bearing design; and new seals and lubricants. It appears that a significant gain in drill-bit life can be attained by the use of higher-temperature steels which retain more hardness at temperatures above 260/sup 0/C (500/sup 0/F). Such steels are available, and two resea… more

Characterization of particulate material extracted from a large sodium loop

Description: The particulate material entrained in the sodium of the Westinghouse ARD's General Purpose Sodium Loop No. 2 (GPL-2) was evaluated as part of the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) Pump Bearing Test. The test plan specified a weight fraction concentration of solid particulates in the sodium to be less than 1 part per million (ppM) and an upper size limit on the particle unit of 50 ..mu..m (2 mils). The particulate matter was evaluated because of the potential enhancement of wear on the pump bearing… more
