Microstructure of Josephson Junctions: Effect on Supercurrent Transport in YBCO Grain Boundary and Barrier Layer Junctions

Description: The electric transport of high-temperature superconductors, such as YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}x} (YBCO), can be strongly restricted by the presence of high-angle grain boundaries (GB). This weak-link behavior is governed by the macroscopic GB geometry and the microscopic grain boundary structure and composition at the atomic level. Whereas grain boundaries present a considerable impediment to high current applications of high T{sub c} materials, there is considerable commercial interest … more

Simultaneous quasiparticle and Josephson tunneling in BSCCO-2212 break junctions.

Description: Tunneling measurements are reported for superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) break junctions on underdoped, optimally-doped, and overdoped single crystals of Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 8+{delta}} (Bi-2212). The junction I-V characteristics exhibit well-defined quasiparticle current jumps at eV = 2A as well as hysteretic Josephson currents. The quasiparticle branch has been analyzed in the framework of d{sub x{sup 2}-y{sup 2}} (d-wave) superconductivity and indicates that there … more

Angular dependence of the Josephson critical current across c-axis twist junctions of layered superconductors.

Description: The authors studied theoretically the c-axis Josephson critical current for bicrystals of high temperature superconductors twisted an angle {phi}{sub 0} about the c-axis with respect to each other. They used the effective Lawrence-Doniach models appropriate for the cases of pure s-wave or d{sub x{sup 2}-y{sup 2}}-wave order parameters, and of a dominant d{sub x{sup 2}-y{sup 2}}-wave order parameter combined with a subdominant one of either s-wave or d{sub xy}-wave form, as a function of the tem… more

LLE Review, Quarterly Report: Volume 77, October-December 1998

Description: This volume of the LLE Review, covering the period October--December 1998, includes two articles addressing issues applicable to direct-drive ICF on the National Ignition Facility (NIF): laser-plasma interactions and laser-irradiation uniformity. Additional highlights of the research presented in this issue are: (1) P.B. Radha and S. Skupsky present a novel charged-particle diagnostic that performs simultaneous {rho}R measurements of the fuel, shell, and ablator regions of a compressed ICF targ… more

Condensate Mixtures and Tunneling

Description: The experimental study of condensate mixtures is a particularly exciting application of the recently developed atomic-trap Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) technology: such multiple condensates represent the first laboratory systems of distinguishable boson superfluid mixtures. In addition, as the authors point out in this paper, the possibility of inter-condensate tunneling greatly enhances the richness of the condensate mixture physics. Not only does tunneling give rise to the oscillating parti… more
