Variations in volatiles in magma bodies based on studies of melt inclusions

Description: Knowledge of volatile concentrations in magmas are important in the prediction of explosive volcanism, and contribute to the understanding of the carbon dioxide budget of the atmosphere. Some important variables that are controlled by volatiles are: crystallization temperature of phases, composition of liquids minimum, and viscosity. Volatiles are also catalysts for reactions.

Reconstitution of halorhodopsin

Description: Halobacterium halobium contains a family of retinal-bound proteins: bacteriorhodopsin (bR) which mediates phototrophic growth as a light-riven proton pump, halorhodopsin (hR) which is a light-driven chloride pump, and one or more sensory rhodopsins (sR) which mediate a phototactic response. Two-dimensional crystallization of halorhodopsin has been attempted though the reconstitution of purified halorhodopsin with purple membrane lipid for electron microscopy work. The first important step for c… more

Influence of ion irradiated SrTiO/sub 3/ on the properties of thin film oxide superconductors

Description: The quality of high temperature superconducting thin films is dependent on the structure of the substrate used. The present work examines the effects of radiation damaged SrTiO/sub 3/ substrates on the properties of Y/sub 1/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ thin film superconductors. Prior to film deposition, single crystal SrTiO/sub 3/ substrates were cooled to 77 K and irradiated with 400 keV Ne ions to doses of 1 /times/ 10/sup 15/ and 1 /times/ 10/sup 16/ ions/cm/sup 2/. Following deposition the f… more

Growth kinetics for the precipitation of zirconium hydroxide from aqueous zirconium and tin bearing solutions by the addition of ammonium hydroxide

Description: The precipitation of zirconium hydroxide from an aqueous solution of ammonium hexafluorozirconate occurs rapidly upon addition of ammonium hydroxide. Experimental data indicate growth and nucleation rates between 0.06 and 0.28 microns/minute and around 10 {times} 107 number/L-min, respectively. Experiments with a mixed suspension mixed product removal crystallizer for concentrations of reactants of about 0.05 M ammonium hexafluorozirconate precipitating with 0.002 M ammonium hydroxide showed ap… more

Amorphous metal alloys produced by mechanical alloying

Description: Mechanical alloying is a powder metallurgy method used in commercial production of high temperature superalloys. Under specific conditions, mechanical alloying allows the synthesis of amorphous metal alloys from mixtures of pure metal powders or from the powders of intermetallic compounds. Because the amorphizing transformation during mechanical alloying is a solid state reaction, most of the difficulties related to the amorphization by rapid solidification of melts can be avoided. Mechanical a… more
