Proceedings of the wellbore sampling workshop

Description: Representatives from academia, industry and research laboratories participated in an intensive two-day review to identify major technological limitations in obtaining solid and fluid samples from wellbores. Top priorities identified for further development include: coring of hard and unconsolidated materials; flow through fluid samplers with borehole measurements T, P and pH; and nonintrusive interrogation of pressure cores.

A systematic procedure for reservoir characterization: Annual report for the period October 1, 1985-September 30, 1986

Description: This report deals with a variety of topics all centered around the main goal of making numerical reservoir simulation results conform more closely with geologic descriptions. The first part of the report discusses results on conditional simulations of miscible displacements in randomly heterogeneous permeable media. The focus here is on local or macroscopic dispersion, the dispersion experienced at a fixed point in the medium. Macroscopic dispersivity has many of the same dependencies on reserv… more

Assessing the benefits of OHER (Office of Health and Environmental Research) research: Three case studies

Description: This research was undertaken to estimate the societal benefits and costs of selected past research performed for the Office of Health and Environmental Research (OHER) of the US Department of Energy (DOE). Three case studies of representative OHER and DOE research were performed. One of these, the acid rain case study, includes research conducted elsewhere in DOE. The other two cases were the OHER marine research program and the development of high-purity germanium that is used in radiation det… more

The TAB method for numerical calculation of spray droplet breakup

Description: A short history is given of the major milestones in the development of the stochastic particle method for calculating liquid fuel sprays. The most recent advance has been the discovery of the importance of drop breakup in engine sprays. We present a new method, called the TAB method, for calculating drop breakup. Some theoretical properties of the method are derived; its numerical implementation in the computer program KIVA is described; and comparisons are presented between TAB-method calculat… more

Extended analysis of constant-height hydraulic fractures for the estimation of in-situ crack-opening modulus from bottomhole pressure records

Description: Hydraulic fractures created in oil and gas bearing rock formations can be made to propagate for a limited time at approximately constant height if favorable stress, deformation modulus or fracture toughness barriers to height growth exist and if the fracture design is suitably optimized to exploit these favorable conditions and reduce height growth. In this report, a unified theoretical formulation for the Perkins-Kern-Nordgren (PKN) and Christianovitch-Geertsma-De Klerk-Daneshy (CGDD) constant… more

Approaches to the assessment of injuries to soil arising from discharges of hazardous substances and oil: Type B, Technical information document

Description: Methods for determining the nature and magnitude of injury to the following natural resources are described for: soil chemical characteristics (acidity or pH, cation exchange capacity, percent base saturation, salinity); soil physical characteristics (porosity, water holding capacity, aggregate stability); biological characteristics (microbial activities, invertebrate activities, vegetation); and contaminant transport potential (leaching, food chain). In addition, this document explains how inj… more

Assessment of pulverized-coal-fired combustion performance: Final report for the period September 1980--September 1983

Description: The purpose of this program was to evaluate an engineering analysis procedure which could be used to assess the impact on thermal performance of converting gas and oil fired equipment to coal. The program consisted of four major tasks: (1) Engineering Analysis. The objective was to evaluate currently available models which could be used to predict combustor performance and to define a procedure which could be used to assess the impact of a coal firing in a boiler or furnace; (2) Reactor Studies… more

A prototype radar fracture mapping system

Description: The design and fabrication of a prototype radar system for fracture detection have been completed. This system uses directional antennas for both the transmitter and the receiver in a single tool which provides both the distance and the direction of a fracture in a downhole application. Electronic circuits in the system generate 50 kW peak power impulse with -100 dbm minimum detectable sensitivity. Unique downhole sampling and uphole data reconstruction techniques are used to obtain high freque… more

A new method for determining fluid flow paths during hydraulic fracturing

Description: Although hydraulic fracturing is a popular method for increasing the productivity of oil and gas wells, there is no direct way other than drilling additional boreholes to determine where the injected fluid has gone and thus what direction a fracture has propagated. Information about fluid flow paths is important for designing subsequent fracturing operations for nearby wells. Determining the locations and orientations of permeable fractures is also important in studies of potential toxic waste … more

Permeability changes during shear deformation of fractured rock

Description: The effect of shear deformation on the permeability of fractured rock has been investigated in drained triaxial compression experiments on prefractured samples of Coconino sandstone. These experiments show that permeability across a fracture decreases with increasing shear deformation because of localized deformation along the fractures and the evolution of a gouge zone. Petrographic observations show a progressive decrease in grain size and porosity of the gouge zone with increasing shear disp… more

Well test analysis in fractured media

Description: The behavior of fracture systems under well test conditions and methods for analyzing well test data from fractured media are investigated. Several analytical models are developed to be used for analyzing well test data from fractured media. Numerical tools that may be used to simulate fluid flow in fractured media are also presented. Three types of composite models for constant flux tests are investigated. These models are based on the assumption that a fracture system under well test conditio… more

An experimental investigation of pressure drop of aqueous foam in laminar tube flow

Description: This report is the first of two detailing pressure-drop and heat-transfer measurements made at the Foam Flow Heat Transfer Loop. The work was motivated by a desire to extend the application of aqueous foam from petroleum drilling to geothermal drilling. Pressure-drop measurements are detailed in this report; a forthcoming report (SAND85-1922) will describe the heat-transfer measurements. The pressure change across a 2.4-m (8-ft) length of the 2.588-cm (1.019-in.) ID test section was measured fo… more

Mechanism of reservoir testing

Description: In evaluating geothermal resources we are primarily interested in data on the distribution of temperature and fluid conductivity within the reservoir, the total volume of the productive formations, recharge characteristics and chemical quality of the thermal fluids. While geophysical exploration by surface methods may furnish some data on the temperature field and give indications as to the reservoir volume, they furnish practically no information on the fluid conductivity and production charac… more

Dispersivity as an oil reservoir rock characteristic: Annual report for the period October 1, 1985-September 30, 1986

Description: The main objective of this research project is to establish dispersivity, ..cap alpha../sub d/, as an oil reservoir rock characteristic and to use this reservoir rock property to aid in enhancing crude oil recovery. A second objective is to compare the dispersion coefficient and the dispersivity of various reservoir rocks with other rock characteristics such as porosity, permeability, capillary pressure, and relative permeability. The dispersivity of a rock was identified as one of its physical… more

Feasibility of application of Thayer method to crude oil distillation

Description: The purpose of this report is to present the results of an evaluation of Victor R. Thayer's invention: ''Process and Apparatus for reducing the Energy Required to Separate Liquids by Distillation'', applied to crude oil distillation. In brief, Thayer claims that given a side draw-off pump-around on a distillation column for energy conservation, there would be a significant cost advantage by using on-tray heat exchange rather than external exchange. Preliminary cost estimates were made: external… more
