Analysis of Vanadium in Milk Powder by Neutron Activation Analysis Using a Rapid Radiochemical Separation of 3.77-Minute Vanadium-52

Description: A procedure is described for the activation determination of V in powdered milk using 3.77-min V/sup 52/. The quantity of V in the sample is obtained by comparing the V/sup 52/ radioactivity found in the test sample with the V/sup 52/ radioactivity in a V comparator sample that is treated in the same manner as the test sample. The procedure can also be used for the determination of V in a variety of materials. (P.C.H.)

INSTRUMENT FOR DETERMINING CRUSHING STRENGTH OF PARTICLES

Description: An instrument for crushing-strength determinations of uncoated and pyrolytic-carbon-coated fuel particles (50 to 500 mu in diameter) was developed to relate the crushing strength of the particles to their fabricability. The instrument consists of a loading mechanism, load cell, and a power supply-readout unit. The information that can be obtained by statistical methods of the data analysis is illustrated by results on two batches of fuel particles. (auth)

Organic Coolant Research Summary Report, July 1, 1960-March 31, 1963

Description: : : 7 : ; : = : : 9 ; 8 : ; / he use of organic liquids as reactor moderator-coolants is presented. A major part of the study was devoted to the mechanism of radiolytic damage to coolants. A mathematical treatment for handling information on the relative reactivity of different positions on an aromatic ring was developed in some detail. Determinations on products from the radiolysis of terphenyls, biphenyl, and mixtures of these with benzene indicate that free radicals may be the main reactive … more

An Experimental Investigation of Two-Phase, Two-Component Flow in a Horizontal, Converging-Diverging Nozzle

Description: A discussion is presented of an investigation of the flow characteristics in a horizontal, converging-diverging nozzle for a two-phase, air- water system. The primary consideration, to determine the effects of accelerating the liquid phase by the gaseous phase, was measured in terms of nozzle exit water velocity, exit slip ratio, and exit acceleration factor. A gamma-ray-attenuation technique was used to determine these values by determining the average cross-sectional void fraction, the ratio … more

PHYSICS DIVISION SUMMARY REPORT, NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 1962

Description: The error in an approximation relating an equivalent local potential to a nonlocal potential in optical-model calculations was investigated. The differential cross section and polarization for neutrons scattered from Cd at 0.45 Mev were calculated by the nonlocal optical modei and two forms of the local optical model. Agreement of one local mode curve with the noniocal curve was far better than for the other that used different well-depth parameters. Elastic proton scattering from Cu/sup 63/, C… more

METHODS OF PREDICTING THE PERFORMANCE OF SEMICONDUCTOR ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS IN A NUCLEAR ENVIRONMENT

Description: The performance of electronic circuits and systems in a radiation environment can be determined if the radiation induced component changes are known and if system performance as a function of component changes can be determined. The most economical way of determining alterations of system performance caused by radiation combines analysis with an experimental technique intended for laboratory use. The analytical method requires that the performance of the system be expressed mathematically in te… more

A STATISTICAL DETERMINATION OF THE REDUCED PROMPT NEUTRON GENERATION TIME,$lambda$//anti $beta$/, IN THE SPERT IV REACTOR

Description: An experimental determination of the reduced prompt neutron generation time LAMBDA / BETA in the Spert IV reactor utilizing a technique based on the statistical behavior of the neutron population is described. A mathematical model including the effects of delayed neutrons that relates the statistic variance-to-mean ratio of the count rate as a function of counting time'' to integral reactor parameters is derived. This model is used in conjunction with subcritical counting measurements from the … more

A NEW METHOD TO DETERMINE VARIOUS FREE ENERGY STATES OF SILVER OXIDE ON SILVER METAL

Description: The solubility of silver oxide on silver metal is not the same as that of the bulk oxide. The differences in solubility were investigated by shaking silver powder in deaerated solutions of various concentrations of ammonia and in buffers of ammonia and ammonium nitrate at a constant temperature of 25 deg C. These solutions were shaken in an atmosphere of N/sub 2/ in a stoppered bottle and in the absence of light. The concentration of silver ion in these solutions was measured potentiometrically… more

BEVATRON OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT. XXXIII. Period Covered February- April 1962

Description: Experimental work consisted of one new run started and completed this quarter, and the completion of one of the three continuing runs. Of the scheduled operating time, the beam was on for 69.4% of the time, 2.3% of the time was used for experimental setup, and equipment outage took 29.3% of the time. There were two scheduled and two impromptu shutdowns. During one of the scheduled shutdowns the external-beam extraction magnets were installed in the east and south tangent tanks. The other schedu… more

UPTAKE AND TRANSFER OF FALLOUT I$sup 131$ IN PREGNANT WOMEN

Description: Levels of I/sup 131/ in pregnant women and controls were determined by whole-body counting with a scintillation crystal placed over the thyroid. No detectable levels of I/sup 131/ were found. Ten fetal thyroids and milk samples were also negative for I/sup 131/. In a second series counted during Oct. through Dec. 1962, levels of I/sup 131/ in pregnant women ranged from 0 to 160 pC. In 5 of the offspring of these women measured from 18 to 34 days after birth, no significant levels of I/sup 131/ … more

ULTRASONIC ATTENUATION IN LEAD

Description: The absorption of longitudinal ultrasonic waves was studied as a function of transverse magnetic field in pure single crystals of lead at 1.2 deg K. The results were found to be generally consistent with the Fermi surface of lead suggested by Gold. In particular a detailed study of the magneto-acoustic oscillations, as a function of sample orientation and field direction, allowed the determination of some of the dimensions of the hole surface in the second Brillouin zone and revealed a number o… more

EVALUATION OF SURFACE ATTACHED THERMOCOUPLES DURING FORCED CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER

Description: Metal-clad thermocouples with a flat (spade) tip were used to measure the temperature of a 0.030-in.-thick metal plate acting as a forced convection heat transfer surface. The thermocouples were found to change the temperature of the plate at the point of attachment by 40 percent of the temperature difference between fluid and plate. This value was found to be independent of fluid velocity, heat flux, and fluid temperature. A heat transfer model of the thernrocouple was developed and analyzed t… more

Equipment for Hardness Testing at Elevated Temperatures

Description: The design and testing procedures of two elevatedtemperature hardness testers are described. One device uses a Rockwell tester with a large vertical capacity and a load range of 15 to 150 kg. The tester is equipped with a 900 deg C heating chamber which maintains an argon atmosphere over the specimen and can be laterally displaced by a cross-feed mechanism to allow repeated hardness readings to be made on the same specimen. The second instrument is a microindentation hardness tester for hardnes… more

Burnout Conditions for Nonuniformly Heated Rod in Annular Geometry. Water at 1000 PSIA

Description: Tests were run to determine the burnout conditions for a nonuniformly heated rod in an annular geometry. Two special electrically heated rods were used; the cosine rod, which gave an approximate cosine axial heat flux distribution; and the truncated cosine rod, identical to the cosine, except for one end cut short. The rod to be tested was placed in a circular tube test section to form the annular flow path for the water coolant. Only the rod was heated; the outer surface (tube) was essentially… more
