MEAN SQUARE VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION MEASUREMENTS WITH NEUTRON-SENSITIVE ION CHAMBERS

Description: The mean square fluctuation voltage in neutron sensitiv ion chambers was measured rather than the d-c current to improve gamma discrimination and eliminate d-c cable leakage interference currents. The circuitry and chambe are described, and performance in the mean square volta mode is compared with that in the d-c current mode. (D.C.W.)

THE SLUG-ANNULAR FLOW REGIME TRANSITION AT ELEVATED PRESSURE

Description: The annular slug flow regime has been investigated in vertical upflow without heating through the use of an electrical conductivity probe. The Teflon cladding and seals of the probe were found to work to at least 488 deg F. When the inlet velocity was sufficientiy high, the quality at transition was found to be a constant for each pressure going from 8.6% at215 psia to 17.6% at 615 psia. No fully developed bubbly flow was observed. (auth)

A PROPOSAL FOR THE Mc$sup 2$ ISOCHRONOUS CYCLOTRON. A GENERAL PURPOSE HIGH- INTENSITY 810-Mev PROTON ACCELERATOR

Description: An isochronous eight-sector proton cyclotron to provide an extracted beam in excess of 100 mu amp at 810 Mev is proposed. The primary proton beam and the secondary meson and neutron beams will be used to investigate nuclear structure and the interactions between elementary particles. Biomedical and space-oriented research programs are also planned. Shielded research areas and an extensive beam transport and analysis system are provided. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the M… more

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUCLEAR PHYSICS WITH REACTOR NEUTRONS. OCTOBER 15-17, 1963. A Topical Conference of the American Physical Society

Description: The subject matter is divided into five sections: fundamental properties of neutrons, precision measurements of and experiments with capture gamma rays, neutron cross sections, and fission processes. Of the 52 papers presented, separate abstracts were prepared for 43; 9 were previously abstracted in NSA. (R.E.U.)

CRITICAL EXPERIMENT WITH BORAX-V. Internal Superheater

Description: A critical experiment was performed with 12 BORAX-V superheater subassemblies in a central voidable region plus 1228 to 1525 UO/sub 2/ fuel pins (3 wt% enriched) in a peripheral region. Removing water (28% of superheater volume) at room temperature decreased reactivity by 2.2%. The midplane (two- dimensional) peak-to-average power distribution in the voided superheater was approximately 1.24, mostly attributable to flux depressions within insulated fuel boxes. Cadmium ratios are also reported. … more

Corrosion Experience with Aluminum Powder Products

Description: Extrusions of aluminum alloy powder products were obtained from several sources and evaluated for corrosion resistance to high-temperature (260-- 350 deg C) water. Several types of tubing impact-extruded by ALCOA were tested. The stronger tabing (M655) failed very rapidly. The weaker tubing suffered extensive localized surface attack and penetration of the corrosion attack along the extrusion direction after prolonged ( approximates 3 months) exposure to 290 deg C water. A precorrosion heat tre… more

Reactivity Worth of Transverse Gaps

Description: Fuel blocks of compacted ZrO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/ powder in paraffin were added axially to two unreflected assemblies (20 x 16 in. and 20 x 24 in. cross sections). The separation of the assembly halves when criticality occurred was determined, and the reactivity worth at a given critical gap size was obtained by bringing the halves slightly closer together and observing the reactor period. The core with the larger cross section had a maximum gap twice that of the smaller core. Diffusion theory … more

Physical Limitations on the Measurement of Transient Fields in Air and in Dissipative Media Using Electric and Magnetic Probes

Description: The properties of electric and magnetic probes for the measurement of transient electromagnetic fields in air and in dissipative media are discussed briefly, It is shown that the effective height of an electrically small loop is independent of the ambient medium. This is also virtually true for a thin electrically short dipole (or monopole). If the open-circuit voltage of a magnetic probe can be measured accurately, it is possible (in principle) to reconstruct the time history of the incident m… more

Shield Small Source Experiments. Summary Report

Description: A shielding experiment was performed that provided a proof test of the shield calculation methods used in the MCR shield desing and provides a partial confirmation of cross-section data. Measurements were made with a gamma spectrometer behind a configuration consisting of a layer of gamma shielding material followed by a neutron shield, with the configuration exposed to neutrons from a Po --Be source. The test configuration is illustrated. Secondary gamma rays produced in the assembly were meas… more

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER, 1963

Description: As a part of the effort to establish the vapor pressure of /sup 3/He as the international temperature scale between 0.3 and 3.2 deg K, the manometric contections from /sup 4/He to /sup 3/He are being determined. The results of a single run did not agree with the predicted values. Calculations indicated that a two to one thermal diffusion column cascade is more efficient than a three to one cascade for separation of neon isotopes. Gaseous impurities in neon were reduced from 3.40 to 0.26% by pas… more

Buckling Measurements-Heavy Natural Uranium Tubular Fuel Assemblies

Description: One-region buckling measurements that were made on a series of D/sub 2/O- moderated lattices of heavy uranium metal tubes in the Process Development Pile at Savannah River Laboratory are presented. The purposes of these measurements are to provide normalization points for lattice bucklings and to extend the study of natural uranium- D/sub 2/O systems. The dependence of buckiing on the moderatorto-fuel ratio is studied for two types of lattices. (R.E.U.)

Performance and Energy-Transfer Measurements on Cylindrical Cesium Thermionic Converters

Description: Detailed measurements of performance and energy transfer were made on two highly instrumented cylindrical cesium thermionic converters with electrically heated tungsten emitters. The first converter, OC-4, which had a niobium collector, operated with an initial electrical output of 6.9 watts/cm/sup 2/. This output gradually degraded to a value of 4.6 watts/cm/sup 2/ after 1351 hr. These power values were measured at the electrodes for an average emitter temperature of 1 750 deg C, Converter OC-… more

Description: This report is a documentation of the experimental data from each test of the series performed in the Spert I reactor with the type D, fully enriched, aluminum plate-type core. The series of tests consisted of step-wise insertions of excess reactivity under conditions of ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. The data obtained from each test are presented in tabular form and as plots of the time behavior of reactor power, fuel plate surface temperature, and pressure. Composite figures, d… more

Development of salt velocity technique

Description: The salt velocity technique for measuring coolant flow through a SNAP 8 tri-cusp channel was studied and developed. The parameters important in obtaining reproducible data were investigated and a test procedure, which yields dath of good precision, was developed. Dath were taken on a tri-cusp channel with flush circular electrodes (0.125 inch O.D.) as well as on a tri-cusp channel with parallel plate electrodes (0.006 inches thick, 0.250 inches long), which were situated 0.050 inches apart and … more
