Development and testing of an air quality model for Mexico City

Description: Los Alamos National Laboratory and Instituto Mexicano del Petroleo have embarked on a joint study of options for improving air quality in Mexico City. The intent is to develop a modeling system which can address the behavior of pollutants in the region so that option for improving Mexico City air quality can be properly evaluated. ARM tropical pacific experiment (ATPEX): Role of cloud, water vapor and convection feedbacks in the coupled ocean/atmosphere system

Description: We have initiated studies that include radiation model validation, improved treatment of the three-dimensional structure of cloud-radiation interactions, and sensitivity runs that will unravel the role of cloud-convection-radiation interactions in the Pacific Sear Surface Temperatures and the overlying Walker and Hadley circulation. The research program is divided into three phases: (1) radiation, (2) cloud parameterization issues; (3) feedback and ocean-atmosphere interactions.

Variational elliptic solver for atmospheric applications

Description: We discuss a conjugate gradient type method -- the conjugate residual -- suitable for solving linear elliptic equations that result from discretization of complex atmospheric dynamical problems. Rotation and irregular boundaries typically lead to nonself-adjoint elliptic operators whose matrix representation on the grid is definite but not symmetric. Elevated stratified layers observed during VTMX.

Description: A suite of instrumentation including a minisodar, a low-frequency, single-axis sodar, a wind profiling radar and a tethersonde was used during the Vertical Transport and Mixing field study in Salt Lake City, UT, USA, to study the evolution and dynamics of stratified layers that commonly develop during nighttime. Solar semidiurnal tidal wind oscillations above the CART site

Description: Harmonic analysis of wintertime data from 915- and 404-MHz radar wind profilers at four sites in North America has identified coherent semidiurnal wind oscillations through the entire depth of the troposphere. These winds are readily apparent above the CART site, as evidenced from analyses of data from the Haviland, KS, radar profiler. The characteristics of this wind system match the characteristics of solar semidiurnal atmospheric tides, as predicted by a simple dynamic model.

Anisotropic multi-resolution analysis in 2D, application to long-range correlations in cloud mm-radar fields

Description: Because of Earth`s gravitational field, its atmosphere is strongly anisotropic with respect to the vertical; the effect of the Earth`s rotation on synoptic wind patterns also causes a more subtle form of anisotropy in the horizontal plane. Report of preliminary analysis of data from dew-point hygrometer profiles during the ARM 1996 WVIOP

Description: Unique commercial light-weight chilled-mirror dew-point sensors were flown on tethered balloons during the Water Vapor Intensive Operation Period (WVIOP) in September 1996.
