The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments and the Great Lakes Economy: Challenges and Opportunities

Description: This paper deals with the market for SO{sub 2} emission allowances over time and electric utility compliance choices. For currently high emitting plants ( > 2.5 lb SO{sub 2}/MMBtu), the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) provide for about twice as many SO{sub 2} allowances to be issued per year in Phase 1 (1995--1999) than in Phase 2. Also, considering the scrubber incentives in Phase 1, there is likely to be substantial emission banking for use in Phase 2. Allowance prices are expected to in… more

Relative availability of selected trace elements from coal fly ash and Lake Michigan sediment

Description: The concentration of greater than 1 ..mu..m coal fly ash particles in Lake Michigan surface waters was found to be 10/sup 5/ to 10/sup 6/ per liter. With an expected residence time of one year, this concentration implies a flux to the sediment of 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 7/ particles/cm/sup 2//yr, or about 10/sup -6/ to 10/sup -5/ g/cm/sup 2//yr. The release of trace elements from fly ash and sediment has been studied using Chelex-100 resin to simulate leaching at high dilutions in natural media. Mn… more

Plutonium and Americium Concentration Along Fresh-Water Food Chains of the Great Lakes, U. S. A. Progress Report, July 1976--September 30, 1977

Description: The primary purpose of studying the biogeochemical behavior of transuranic radionuclides in large freshwater lakes began with studies of the distribution of these radionuclides, essentially introduced from the fallout of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, in Lake Ontario. The recognition that an additional source of supply of these nuclides to Lake Ontario (subsequent to their release into Lake Erie) existed in the form of leakage from the Nuclear Fuel Services reprocessing plant at Springville… more

Quantification and reduction of the uncertainty in mass balance models by Monte Carlo analysis of prior data

Description: The general objective of this workshop is to investigate and discuss methods by which uncertainties in mass balance models for toxics in the Great Lakes may be reduced. As described by the workshop prospectus, this paper is focused on problems of reducing (and quantifying) uncertainty as they relate to in situ field observations/system response measurements for the establishment of initial conditions, boundary conditions, calibration/confirmation data sets, and model post-audit data sets.'' Phytoplankton and physical-chemical conditions in selected rivers and the coastal zone of Lake Michigan, 1972

Description: A very large data set was obtained on the nearshore environment of Lake Michigan during 1972. The data set is probably unique in that samples were collected and analyzed for a number of physical-chemical parameters and for phytoplankton standing crop and species composition. Phytoplankton identified during the study totaled 431 taxa of which 306 were diatoms, which serves to illustrate the magnitude of available data. Results are presented for eleven different transects sampled in April and for… more

Transport and transformation of pollutant in the Lake Michigan area. [Pollutants from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas]

Description: The transport and the transformation of pollutants emitted from the Milwaukee and the Chicago areas were studied during August 1976. The study is part of the MAP3S program sponsored by ERDA--DBER. The experiments were conducted in approximately Lagrangian frames of reference utilizing two instrumented aircraft and surface support units. It was found that: 1) build up of ozone downwind of the areas occurred; 2) sulfate concentrations were higher in the urban plume than those upwind, and progress… more

Nutrient enrichment and eutrophication of Lake Michigan. Progress report, November 1, 1971--September 30, 1977

Description: Data on mixing processes in the nearshore zone of Lake Michigan are presented. Emphasis was placed on an area near Holland, Michigan where typical summer mixing patterns of the Kalamazoo River plume between the nearshore zone and mid-lake water mass were studied. Results showed that the nutrient load of the river's tributaries studied had a marked effect on the nearshore zone and the standing crop and species composition of phytoplankton. Data are included on the content of phosphates, silica, … more

Cooling systems research at Argonne National Laboratory

Description: Studies of the thermal plumes resulting from discharges from once-through cooling systems of electric generating stations are reviewed. The collection of large amounts of water temperature data for definition of the three-dimensional structure of a thermal plume, of current data, and related ambient data for model evaluation purposes required the development of an integrated data collection system. The Argonne system employs measurements of water temperature over the water column from a moving … more

Field studies of submerged-diffuser thermal plumes with comparisons to predictive model results

Description: Thermal plumes from submerged discharges of cooling water from two power plants on Lake Michigan were studied. The system for the acquisition of water temperatures and ambient conditions permitted the three-dimensional structure of the plumes to be determined. The Zion Nuclear Power Station has two submerged discharge structures separated by only 94 m. Under conditions of flow from both structures, interaction between the two plumes resulted in larger thermal fields than would be predicted by t… more

Dissolution of diatom frustules and silicon cycling in Lake Michigan, U. S. A

Description: Diatoms require dissolved silicon for the formation of the silicate frustule that surrounds the cell. Potential sources of this silicon include dissolution of frustules produced by previous diatom communities, inputs of dissolved silicon from land drainage, and dissolution of silicate minerals. Results are reported from investigations on the relationship between diatom-frustule production, sedimentation, and dissolution to determine the importance and the mechanisms of silicon recycling in a la… more
