Pion correlations as a function of atomic mass in heavy ion collisions

Description: The method of two pion interferometry was used to obtain source-size and lifetime parameters for the pions produced in heavy ion collisions. The systems used were 1.70 {center dot} A GeV {sup 56}Fe + Fe, 1.82 {center dot} A GeV {sup 40}Ar + KCl and 1.54 {center dot} A GeV {sup 93}Nb + Nb, allowing for a search for dependences on the atomic number. Two acceptances (centered, in the lab., at {approximately} 0{degrees} and 45{degrees}) were used for each system, allowing a search for dependences o… more

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, May 1961

Description: The experimental results on the oxidation of H from a He stream with CuO pellets were very close to the predicted behavior based on the mathematical model. Experimental measurements of uranyl sulfate loading rates on chloride equilibrated resin showed little variation with solution concentrations. A tentative flowsbeet was proposed for cost analysis of processing a Pebble Bed Reactor. A U-Zr plate was dissolved in nitrate-free Zirflex solution. An authentic TRIGA prototype was processed in engi… more

Stress Corrosion of Type 304 Stainless Steel in Simulated Superheat Reactor Environments. [Part] 1. Informal Aec Research and Develoment Report 568-Tio-2

Description: A fuel jacket failure that occurred in May 1961 in the Type 304 stainless steel clad fuel element exposed in the Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor superheated steam loop (SADE) was attributed to chloride stress corrosion cracking. In order to better understand the failure, a test program was carried out to try to reproduce the rapid stress corrosion attack in the simulated superheat reactor environment of the CL-1 superheat facility. The methods of corrosion testing under heat transfer condition… more

Revised minimum nitrite concentration for ESP

Description: Nitrite is to be used to inhibit pitting corrosion during Extended Sludge Processing (ESP) at the Savannah River Plant. The required nitrite concentrations are expressed as a function of the slurries' nitrate ion concentration and temperature. In the most dilute slurries, the nitrite inhibitor requirement is independent of the nitrate ion concentration and depends only on the temperature of the waste. The nitrate-independent concentration ensures that there is sufficient inhibitor, in sludge sl… more

Reactive Membrane Barriers for Containment of Subsurface Contamination

Description: The overall goal of this project was to develop reactive membrane barriers--a new and flexible technique to contain and stabilize subsurface contaminants. Polymer membranes will leak once a contaminant is able to diffuse through the membrane. By incorporating a reactive material in the polymer, however, the contaminant is degraded or immobilized within the membrane. These processes increase the time for contaminants to breakthrough the barrier (i.e. the lag time) and can dramatically extend bar… more

Thermal extraction analysis of five Los Azufres production wells

Description: Thermal energy extraction from five wells supplying 5-MWe wellhead generators in three zones of the Los Azufres geothermal field has been examined from production and chemical data compiled over 14-years of operation. The data, as annual means, are useful in observing small-scale changes in reservoir performance with continuous production. The chemical components are chloride for quality control and the geothermometer elements for reservoir temperatures. The flowrate and fluid enthalpy data are… more

Modified phosphate ceramics for stabilization and solidification of salt mixed wastes.

Description: Novel chemically bonded phosphate ceramics have been investigated for stabilization and solidification of chloride and nitrate salt wastes. Using low-temperature processing, we stabilized and solidified chloride and nitrate surrogate salts (with hazardous metals) in magnesium potassium phosphate ceramics up to waste loadings of 70-80 wt.%. A variety of characterizations, including strength, microstructure, and leaching, were then conducted on the waste forms. Leaching tests show that all heavy … more

Amines as Extractants--Survey of the Descriptive and Fundamental Extraction Chemistry

Description: Both the study and the use of extractions with highmolecular-weight amines (including quaternary ammoniums) in organic solution are increasing extensively. While equilibria have been measured in the extraction of an increasing range of acids and Aetal ions, a difficulty remains unresolved in that the amine concentration powerdependence of extraction often indicates a different stoichiometry of the complex existing in the organic phase than do limiting loading and other considerations. Neverthel… more

Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report for March 1959

Description: In a preliminary experiment, the integral diffusivity of 1 M FeCl/sub 3/ solution varied uniformly with the fraction difiused: from 0.3 x 10/sup -6/ cm/ sup 2//sec for 10 per cent diffused to 0.8 x 10/sup -6/ for 30 per cent diffused. A short Fluorox run made with crude UF/sub 4/ in the 4-in. fluidized bed showed that UF/sub 6/ could be produced from the impure feed. Denitration of Th(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ solutions on fluidized or mechanically agitated beds of ThO/sub 2/ and gave fine ThO/sub 2/ p… more

Chemical Environment at Waste Package Surfaces in a High-Level Radioactive Waste Repository

Description: We have conducted a series of deliquescence, boiling point, chemical transformation, and evaporation experiments to determine the composition of waters likely to contact waste package surfaces over the thermal history of the repository as it heats up and cools back down to ambient conditions. In the above-boiling period, brines will be characterized by high nitrate to chloride ratios that are stable to higher temperatures than previously predicted. This is clearly shown for the NaCl-KNO{sub 3} … more

IN-SITU Chemical Oxidation of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons in the Presence of Radionuclides

Description: Treatability testing for In Situ Chemical Oxidation was conducted on a site where the groundwater was contaminated with trichloroethylelne, nitroaromatics, nitrate, and radionuclides. The treatability testing involved characterization of the contaminated aquifer material and groundwater, soil oxidant demand testing, and batch slurry reaction tests. The aquifer oxidant demand was 0.44 to 0.89 grams KMnO4 per kg aquifer solids. This is an exceptionally low level and indicates that permanganate re… more

Liquid effluent Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) implementation summary report

Description: This report summarizes liquid effluent analytical data collected during the Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) Implementation Program, evaluates whether or not the sampling performed meets the requirements of the individual SAPs, compares the results to the WAC 173-200 Ground Water Quality Standards. Presented in the report are results from liquid effluent samples collected (1992-1994) from 18 of the 22 streams identified in the Consent Order (No. DE 91NM-177) requiring SAPs.

Thermodynamic Phase And Chemical Equilibrium At 0-110 C For The H+-K+-Na+-Cl--H2O System Up To 16 Molal And The HNO3-H2O System Up To 20 Molal Using An Association-Based Pitzer Model Compatible With ASPEN Plus

Description: A status is presented of the parameterization during FY2003 of an association-based Pitzer model to simulate chemical and phase equilibria of acid-chloride-nitrate-mercury aqueous electrolyte systems at 0-100 C within the industry-standard process simulator, ASPEN Plus. Compatibility with ASPEN Plus requires that the Pitzer model used be limited to the third virial coefficient and have the values of b and a1 as originally proposed by Pitzer. Two aqueous models for 0-110 C at atmospheric pressur… more
