Scale effects in sliding friction: An experimental study

Description: Solid friction is considered by some to be a fundamental property of two contacting materials, while others consider it to be a property of the larger tribosystem in which the materials are contained. A set of sliding friction experiments were designed to investigate the hypothesis that the unlubricated sliding friction between two materials is indeed a tribosystems-related property and that the relative influence of the materials properties or those of the machine on friction varies from one s… more

Mesoscale modeling of grain boundary migration under stress using coupled finite element and meshfree methods.

Description: The process of grain boundary migration involves moving interfaces and topological changes of grain boundary geometry. This can not be effectively modeled by Lagrangian, Eulerian, or arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian finite element formulation when stress effect is considered. A coupled finite element and meshfree approach is proposed for modeling of grain boundary migration under stress. In this formulation, the material grid carries material kinematic and kinetic variables, whereas the grain boun… more

Observation of Localized Corrosion of Ni-Based Alloys Using Coupled Orientation Imaging Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy

Description: We present a method for assessing the relative vulnerabilities of distinct classes of grain boundaries to localized corrosion. Orientation imaging microscopy provides a spatial map which identifies and classifies grain boundaries at a metal surface. Once the microstructure of a region of a sample surface has been characterized, a sample can be exposed to repeated cycles of exposure to a corrosive environment alternating with topographic measurement by an atomic force microscope in the same regi… more

Environmental Effects in Advanced Intermetallics

Description: This paper provides a comprehensive review of environmental embrittlement in iron and nickel aluminizes. The embrittlement involves the interaction of these intermetallics with moisture in air and generation of atomic hydrogen, resulting in hydrogen-induced embrittlement at ambient temperatures. Environmental embrittlement promotes brittle grain-boundary fracture in Ni{sub 3}Al alloys but brittle cleavage fracture in Fe{sub 3}Al-FeAl alloys. The embrittlement strongly depends on strain rate, wi… more

Atomic structure of the {sigma}5 (210)/[001] symmetric tilt grain boundary in yttrium aluminum garnet

Description: The {Sigma}5(210)/[100] symmetric tilt grain boundary in YAG was produced by UHV diffusion bonding precisely oriented single crystals. The boundary has been characterized by HREM along two different directions, parallel and perpendicular to the tilt axis. Models of the atomic structure of the boundary were formed following the Coincident Site Lattice scheme. The resulting models are equivalent to twins formed at the atomic scale. The high resolution images show no rigid crystal translations awa… more
