In situ cardiac performance of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) at cold temperatures: long-term acclimation, acute thermal challenge and the role of adrenaline

Description: This article measures the cardiac performance of Newfoundland Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The results: (1) show that maximum performance of the isolated cod heart is not compromised by exposure to cold temperatures; and (2) support data from other studies, which show that, in contrast to salmonids, cod cardiac performance/myocardial contractility is not dependent upon humoral adrenergic stimulation.

Closed-form expressions for the magnetic fields of rectangular and circular finite-length solenoids and current loops

Description: This article discusses closed-form expressions for the magnetic fields produced by rectangular- and circular-shaped finite-length solenoids and current loops. The closed-form expression for the magnetic field of a rectangular-shaped finite-length solenoid is derived using the Biot–Savart law. Closed-form expressions for the magnetic fields of solenoids and current loops can be used to avoid approximations in analytical models and may reduce computation time in computer simulations.

Development of a Thulium Fiber Laser for an Atomic Spectroscopy Experiment

Description: This article is a simplified analysis of a convenient thulium fiber laser source with 3 W of output power operating at a wavelength of 2059 nm with a slope efficiency of 49% with respect to input pump power and 60% with respect to absorbed pump power. The laser was applied in an atomic helium spectroscopy experiment to quench ³He (2058.63 nm) and ⁴He (2058.69 nm) meta-stable singlets (2¹S0), allowing for further investigation of the helium fine structure.

The Fractal Tapestry of Life: III Multifractals Entail the Fractional Calculus

Description: This article is the third essay advocating the use the (non-integer) fractional calculus (FC) to capture the dynamics of complex networks in the twilight of the Newtonian era. Herein, the focus is on drawing a distinction between networks described by monfractal time series extensively discussed in the prequels and how they differ in function from multifractal time series, using physiological phenomena as exemplars.

Development of Novel Approaches to Earth-abundant Methane Catalysis

Description: Data management plan for the grant "Development of Novel Approaches to Earth-abundant Methane Catalysis." Research on catalytic cycles for C–H activation and functionalization of light alkanes based on the CMD (concerted metalation deprotonation) mechanism will be modeled for Earth-abundant metal dicarboxylates and related complexes. The impact of inner and outer coordination sphere effects upon catalytic cycles for light alkane functionalization will be assessed using computational chemistry t… more

NSFDEB-NERC: Collaborative Research: Wildlife corridors: do they work and who benefits?

Description: Data management plan for the grant, "NSFDEB-NERC: Collaborative Research: Wildlife corridors: do they work and who benefits?" Research on the impact of wildlife corridors using genetics as the measure of effectiveness. The study will use 20 independent landscapes to quantify how corridor traits affect gene flow, and will use non-flying mammals as focal species because they are strongly affected by fragmentation. The research team hypothesizes (1) a strong non-linear decline in success (gene flo… more

The chemical coupling between moist CO oxidation and gas-phase potassium sulfation

Description: Article discusses how the chemical coupling between moist CO oxidation and transformation of gaseous potassium salts (KCl or KOH) in the presence and absence of SO2 was investigated experimentally and through chemical kinetic modeling. Analysis of the calculations indicates that sulfation pathways in the model involving KOSO3 contribute to the overprediction, but both the thermodynamic properties and rate constants in the model involve significant uncertainties and more work is required to reso… more
