Determination of nitrogen in boron carbide with the Leco UO-14 Nitrogen Determinator

Description: Use of various metals as fluxes for releasing nitrogen from boron carbide in the Leco Nitrogen Determinator was investigated. Metals such as iron, chromium, and molybdenum that wet the graphite crucible all promoted nitrogen release. Tin, copper, aluminum, and platinum did not wet the graphite and were of no value as fluxes. A procedure for sample handling and the resulting performance of the method are described. The precision at 0.06 to 0.6 percent nitrogen averaged 4 percent relative standar… more

Channel coincidence counter: version 1

Description: A thermal neutron coincidence counter has been designed for the assay of fast critical assembly fuel drawers and plutonium-bearing fuel rods. The principal feature of the detector is a 7-cm by 7-cm by 97-cm detector channel, which provides a uniform neutron detection efficiency of 16% along the central 40 cm of the channel. The electronics system is identical to that used for the High-Level Neutron Coincidence Counter.

Spectrophotometric determination of plutonium with chlorophosphonazo III in n-pentanol

Description: Microgram amounts of plutonium are measured spectrophotometrically as the plutonium-chlorophosphonazo III complex after extraction into n-pentanol from 1.5 M HCl. The relative standard deviation is 1.5% for the range of 2.5 to 17.5 ..mu..g. The tolerance is excellent for many metals and nonmetals present in nuclear fuel-cycle materials. A preceding anion-exchange-column separation increases tolerance for certain metals and nonmetals.

Quantitative analysis of soil chromatography. I. Water and radionuclide transport

Description: Soil chromatography has been used successfully to evaluate relative mobilities of pesticides and nuclides in soils. Its major advantage over the commonly used suspension technique is that it more accurately simulates field conditions. Under such conditions the number of potential exchange sites is limited both by the structure of the soil matrix and by the manner in which the carrier fluid moves through this structure. The major limitation of the chromatographic method, however, has been its qu… more

The limnology of L Lake: Results of the L-Lake monitoring program, 1986--1989

Description: L Lake was constructed in 1985 on the upper regions of Steel Creek, SRS to mitigate the heated effluents from L Reactor. In addition to the NPDES permit specifications (Outfall L-007) for the L-Reactor outfall, DOE-SR executed an agreement with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), that thermal effluents from L-Reactor will not substantially alter ecosystem components in the approximate lower half of L Lake. This region should be inhabited by Balanced (Indi… more

Regenerative Process for Desulfurization of High Temperature Combustion and Fuel Gases. Quarterly Progress Report No. 6, July 1--September 30, 1977

Description: The Brookhaven Regeneration Process, which comprises reacting the sulfated limestone with fly ash from a FBC in a solid-solid contacting kiln-type reactor, has been shown to be more promising than other processes currently under development. Much improvement can be made by optimizing the operating conditions which are primarily: gas flow rate, degree of agitation (rpm), additives (both solids and gases, e.g. steam), types of carbon, etc. TGA kinetic studies also showed promising results. Cyclic… more

Coal surface control for advanced physical fine coal cleaning technologies

Description: The overall objective of the project is to develop techniques for coal surface control prior to the advanced physical fine coal cleaning process of selective agglomeration in order to achieve 90% pyrite sulfur rejection at an energy recovery greater than 90% based on run-of-mine coal. The surface control is meant to encompass surface modification during grinding and laboratory beneficiation testing. The project includes the following tasks: Project planning, method for analysis of samples, deve… more

CdSiAs/sub 2/ thin films for solar cell applications. Second quarter report, July 1, 1979-September 30, 1979. [CdSiAs/sub 2//CdS]

Description: Sputtered films have been formed with two improved composite (Si + CdAs/sub 2/) targets. Near stoichiometric and mechanically continuous CdSiAs/sub 2/ films have been formed on metal substrates. Films of this type will be used over the next reporting period for heterojunction formation. Evaporation studies related to CdAs/sub 2/ have been completed. Stoichiometric CdAs/sub 2/ films could not be formed by means of single-source evaporation of CdAs/sub 2/ bulk. Hence, this dual source approach (S… more
