An Enhanced Magnetic Mirror Machine

Description: Abstract: "A dc magnetic mirror machine has been built and tested by the ARC Research Group. Radiofrequency enhancement has been included in the design through the use of rf plates in the vacuum chamber of the machine. For the proton beams of the order of 1[mu]a, the mirror action has been observed as a function of both the rf voltage and the magnitude of the mirror field relative to the main magnetic field. Current measurements were performed with the aid of a Faraday cup with suitable bias gr… more

The use of ALUM and activated silica for 100 Area process water coagulation. Final report

Description: Production rates of the Hanford reactors can be increased in proportion to the quantity of process cooling water which can be supplied to them. This water must be of such a quality that slug and tube corrosion rates are acceptable, the gross activity of the effluent water must not be excessive, the concentration of specific radioactive isotopes constituting a radiological hazard must be minimized, and the film formation rates should be as low as possible. In the Hanford water treatment process,… more

An Introduction to the Purex Plant

Description: The intent of this manual is to present a description of the main process building, equipment, and auxiliary facilities as well as a process summary. Material is of a scope nature with more detail devoted to features unlike those of existing separations systems. An attempt is made to convey some of the basic design philosophy and the problems encountered in the development of design criteria. This information is written primarily for Separations Section supervision who have not had an opportuni… more

The control of beryllium hazards

Description: From abstract: "The toxicological properties of beryllium and compounds of beryllium are briefly reviewed, together with the historical development of the recommendations for maximum permissible beryllium air concentrations. The application of the enclosure technique presently in use at this laboratory for the control of beryllium hazards is described... Monitoring procedures used to evaluate the performance of enclosures are discussed."

Operational physics comments on fuel pile operational charge-discharge

Description: This document has been written in part to answer questions concerning the feasibility and advisability of ``quickie`` discharge of ruptures at C Reactor. Justification of full pile operational charge-discharge (OC-D) is based in part on outage savings resulting from improved, rupture removal. Since a portion of the rupture removals might be accomplished within the scram recovery time (quickie) it is necessary to consider recovery time as a function of anticipated future power levels. In additio… more

The Metabolism of 2-Caroboxy-4-Ketopentitol Diphosphate

Description: 2-Carboxy-4-ketopentitol is converted enzymatically by a cell-free preparation from spinach leaves into a substance undergoing acid-lactone interconversion. This substance has no phosphate or letone group and is probably a dicarboxylic, six-carbon sugar acid or the saccharic or saccharinic acid type. The significance of these findings with regard to the metabolic role of 2-carboxy-4-ketopentitol diphosphate is discussed.

ANALYSIS OF THE STATUS OF CHROMIUM IN SOLUTION UNDER IN-PILE CONDITIONS

Description: A summary of the Cr data from the HRP in-pile corrosion program is examined in an effort to determine the Cr species present in such solutions under in-pile conddtions. Data from previous in-pile bomb and loop experiments pertinent to Cr behavior are tabulated, and correlations are offered to support a proposed model. It is pointed out that other interpretations of the same data are possible, and to obtain conclusive evidence as to the identity of Cr species in these solutions, especially desig… more

Annual Report ONR Project a-2049. Interim Report

Description: The objective of this program is to conduct a broad basic program of analytical and experimental research into the fundamental behavior of gas- lubricated bearings and to establish general design criteria for these bearings. The work to date has included both theoretical and experimental phases of hydrodynamic and hydrastatic lubrication phenomena, supplemented by a digital computer program. (W. L.H.)

STEADY-STATE PRESSURE AND THERMAL STRESSES IN THE HRT PRESSURE VESSEL

Description: The methods used to calculate the steady-state pressure and thermal stresses in the spherical portion or the HRT pressure vessel are presented, The stresses reported here were calculated using the methods considered most applicable st the present time. These methods yield stresses significantly greater than originally reported for the HRT because the calculated total heat generation rate in the vessel wall is greater, and its distribution is different. A comparison of tworegion (DP reflector) a… more

INFLUENCE OF SURFACE ACTIVE AGENTS ON ThO$sub 2$ SLURRIES

Description: An analysis, based on electrical double-layer concepts, of the influence of surface active agents on ThO/sub 2/ slurry properties indicates that under reactor conditions the use of additives to obtain certain slurry properties such as low yield stress will not be effective. Corrosion ions, fission ions, and ions resulting from radiation will compress the electrical double layer on the particle surface and reduce its dispersing effect. Elevated temperatures will also work against effective doubl… more

High-Strength Zirconium Alloys

Description: The properties of zirconium alloyed with aluminum tin, and molybdenum were investigated. Using reactorgrade zirconium sponge, 11 zirconium-base alloys were double arc-melted and cast into 6-in.-diam. ingots weighing 35 lb each. By such standard hot working procedures as extruding and rolling, the ingots were converted to 1/8-in.-thick strips. The extruded and rolled products were used for a variety of evaluation studies which included corrosion thermal conductivity, tensile, and creep tests. Th… more

Exact solutions of laminar-boundary-layer equations with constant property values for porous wall with variable temperature

Description: From Summary: "Exact solution of the laminar-boundary-layer equations for wedge-type flow with constant property values are presented for transpiration-cooled surfaces with variable wall temperatures. The difference between wall and stream temperature is assumed proportional to a power of the distance from the leading edge. Solutions are given for a Prandtl number of 0.7 and ranges of pressure-gradient, cooling-air-flow, and wall-temperature-gradient parameters. Boundary-layer profiles, dimensi… more
