Description: This report documents the results of a test of the New Calcining Facility (NWCF) process decontamination system. The decontamination system test occurred in December 1981, during non-radioactive testing of the NWCF. The purpose of the decontamination system test was to identify equipment whose design prevented effective calcine removal and decontamination. Environmental Actinide Mobility: Plutonium and Uranium Interactions with Exopolysaccharides and Siderophores of Aerobic Soil Microbes

Description: Research efforts into understanding the effect of siderophores and capsules on actinide speciation and resultant environmental behavior are ongoing. Investigations on both siderophores have progressed. The redox chemistry of Pu(VI) and Pu(V) with DFO under acidic conditions was examined by UV-Vis and NMR spectroscopies. Experiments and evaluation of chaotic behavior of dripping waterin fracture models

Description: Laboratory experiments of water seepage in smooth and rough-walled, inclined fracture models were performed and the monitoring data analyzed for evidence of chaos. One fracture model consisted of smooth, parallel glass plates separated by 0.36 mm. The second model was made with textured glass plates. Experimental Results of NWCF Run H4 Calcine Dissolution Studies Performed in FY-98 and -99

Description: Dissolution experiments were performed on actual samples of NWCF Run H-4 radioactive calcine in fiscal years 1998 and 1999. Run H-4 is an aluminum/sodium blend calcine. Typical dissolution data indicates that between 90-95 wt% of H-4 calcine can be dissolved using 1gram of calcine per 10 mLs of 5-8M nitric acid at boiling temperature.
