Dependence of secondary ion emission from organic material on the energy loss of the impacting heavy ion

Description: Samples of the amino acid valine were irradiated by 2.5 MeV-Ar, 0.8 MeV-Kr and 1.0 MeV Xe beams from the Argonne Dynamitron accelerator in order to study the energy distributions of ejected secondary ions. For Kr and Xe the nuclear stopping power exceeded the electronic stopping power by a factor 2 or 3, respectively, but the functional shape of the energy distributions and the mean ejection energies (0.9--1.4 eV) indicated that the molecular ions (M{plus minus}H){sup {plus minus}} are desorbed… more

Anaerobic fermentation of simulated in-situ oil shale retort water

Description: The feasibility of removing soluble organics from oil shale retort water by anaerobic digestion with methane production was experimentally investigated. The following conclusions were made. The retort water studied had to be pretreated to remove toxic and add deficient constituents before it could be successfully treated with the anaerobic fermentation process. Short-lived positron emitter labeled radiotracers - present status

Description: The preparation of labelled compounds is important for the application of positron emission transaxial tomography (PETT) in biomedical sciences. This paper describes problems and progress in the synthesis of short-lived positron emitter (/sup 11/C, /sup 18/F, /sup 13/N) labelled tracers for PETT. Steroselective synthesis and application of L-( sup 15 N) amino acids

Description: We have developed two general approaches to the stereoselective synthesis of {sup 15}N- and {sup 13}C-labeled amino acids. First, labeled serine, biosynthesized using the methylotrophic bacterium M. extorquens AM1, serves as a chiral precursor for the synthesis of other amino acids. Radiation effects and metalloproteins studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Description: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to study the bonding structure at the iron site of cytochrome c and the bonding of rare earth ions to the phosphate oxygens of ATP. Volatilities of ruthenium, iodine, and technetium on calcining fission product nitrate wastes

Description: Various high-level nitrate wastes were subjected to formic acid denitration. Formic acid reacts with the nitrate anion to yield noncondensable, inert gases according to the following equation: 4 HCOOH + 2 HNO/sub 3/ ..-->.. N/sub 2/O + 4 CO/sub 2/ + 5 H/sub 2/O. Effects of Prudhoe Bay crude oil in sediment on Abarenicola pacifica in laboratory and field experiments

Description: Behavioral responses of organisms are often sensitive indicators of changes in the environment over short time frames. The rate of burrowing of Abarenicola pacifica, a lugworm typical of muddy tidal flats, was studied to determine its response to the presence of hydrocarbons in the environment. Spectrophotometric determination of uranium(IV) with Arsenazo III

Description: A spectrophotometric procedure was developed for determining U(IV) in the presence of U(VI) by forming a colored complex with Arsenazo III in 4M HCl. The results compare satisfactorily with U(IV) determinations by ceric titration. Total uranium can be determined after reduction of U(VI) with metallic zinc. The concentration range for the absorbance cell solution is 0 to 2 ..mu..g U(IV)/mL. Other tetravalent ions, such as thorium, zirconium, hafnium, plutonium, and neptunium, will interfere.
