Second-law efficiency of solar-thermal cavity receivers

Description: Properly quantified performance of a solar-thermal cavity receiver must not only account for the energy gains and losses as dictated by the First Law of thermodynamics, but it must also account for the quality of that energy. However, energy quality can only be determined from the Second Law. In this paper an equation for the Second-Law efficiency of a cavity receiver is derived from the definition of available energy or availability (occassionally called exergy), which is a thermodynamic prope… more

Signatures of new phenomena in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

Description: Three classes of observables are discussed which may shed light on the properties of the quark-gluon plasma formed in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. They are: (1) thermometers: the penetrating probes ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, ..gamma.., c, (2) barometers: transverse flow via <p perpendicular >, and (3) seismometers: fluctuations of dN/dy and dE perpendicular/dy. The need for reliable estimates of the background due to the non-equilibrium processes is emphasized. 49 references.

Computer-assisted analyses of the thermodynamic properties of slags in coal-combustion systems

Description: Equations were developed for the analysis of the thermodynamic properties of molten silicate solutions; the equations take into account the unusual concentration and temperature dependence of the solution properties of ordered systems. For binary systems, these equations were coupled with an optimization computer program to analyze all reliable thermodynamic data, including phase diagrams, free energies and enthalpies of formation of compounds, activities of components, enthalpies of mixing, en… more

Reflected shocks in SiO/sub 2/

Description: Pavlovskii et al, by compression by a magnetic field, find a transition on the quartz isentrope at 125 GPa. The transition, having a 2-fold inrease in density over and above the density increase from quartz to stishovite, is ascribed to the metalization of quartz. The geophysical implications of such a transition would be profound. One would not see such a transition in singly-shocked quartz because all the shock energy would be increasing the thermal energy. Accordingly, we have performed seco… more

4. pi. data of relativistic nuclear collisions. [Plastic ball]

Description: During the past two years, complete events of relativistic nuclear collisions are being studied with the Plastic Ball, the first electronic nonmagnetic particle-identifying 4..pi.. spectrometer. It is well suited to handle the large multiplicities in these reactions and allows collection of data at a rate sufficient to make further software selections to look at rare events. The analysis of the data follows various lines covering topics like thermalization, stopping or transparency, cluster-pro… more
