Photovoltaic and solar-thermal technologies in residential building codes, tackling building code requirements to overcome the impediments to applying new technologies

Description: This report describes the building code requirements and impediments to applying photovoltaic (PV) and solar-thermal technologies in residential buildings (one- or two-family dwellings). It reviews six modern model building codes that represent the codes to be adopted by most locations in the coming years: International Residential Code, First Draft (IRC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), International Fuel Ga… more

FEMP Renewable Energy Fact Sheet: Photovoltaics

Description: Photovoltaic energy systems, which convert sunlight to electricity, can meet many different needs in Federal facilities. This fact sheet describes how photovoltaic (PV) energy systems can be used to provide electricity for lighting, communications, refrigeration, fans, signs, pumps, drilling equipment, emergency power packs, and cathodic (corrosion) protection, among others. Applications for PV power in Federal facilities include staff housing, parking areas, campgrounds, marinas, visitor cente… more

Characterization of amorphous silicon thin films and PV devices: Phase 1 annual technical report: January 1998--January 1999

Description: Major accomplishments of the previous year include: (1) an evaluation of the potential for n-type doping of a-SiS{sub x}:H and a-SiSe{sub x}:H alloys, (2) an investigation of the optically induced metastabilities in a-SiS{sub x}:H and a-SiSe{sub x}:H alloys with regard to their potential use in photovoltaic applications, and (3) a more detailed understanding of the kinetics of light-induced electron spin resonance (ESR) due to carriers trapped in localized band-tail states in a-Si:H. Also of im… more

Thin-film photovoltaic partnership -- CIS-based thin film PV technology: Final technical report, September 1995--December 1998

Description: Siemens Solar Industries (SSI) achieved outstanding progress toward NREL/DOE goals during this subcontract. The statistical process control methodology was applied, and it demonstrated process reproducibility and yields for a 10-cm {times} 10-cm substrate size baseline process. Based on an understanding of the importance of materials of construction and the physical layout for absorber formation reactors, SSI designed and built a replacement large-area reactor based on a more direct scale-up of… more
