Prophetic Visions in 1988: A Critical Reappraisal

Description: Paper reviewing the research into a specific aspect of near-death experiences (NDEs): the prophetic vision (PV). PVs are subjectively compelling flashforwards of planetary-wide cataclysms and eventual regeneration that sometimes occur during or in the immediate aftermath of an NDE.

Psychic Phenomena Following Near-Death Experiences: An Australian Study

Description: Study examining the incidence of reports of psychic phenomena and associated beliefs both before and after the near-death experience (NDE). The near-death experiencers interviewed reported no more psychic phenomena before the NDE than the general population. There was a statistically significant increase following the NDE in the incidence of 14 of 15 items examined.

Psychomanteum Research: A Pilot Study

Description: Study of 57 persons who participated in 31 workshops seeking visionary and other reunion experiences with departed loved ones by means of a mirror-gazing procedure developed by Raymond Moody. The study was an attempt to repeat Moody's findings, to alleviate the grief of the participants, and to explore psychological factors related to their experiences.

Psychophysiological and Cultural Correlates Undermining a Survivalist Interpretation of Near-Death Experiences

Description: Third part of a critique of survivalist interpretations of near-death experiences (NDEs), which considers psychophysiological and cultural correlates of NDEs suggesting that such experiences are solely products of individuals' minds rather than windows into a transcendental realm.

"Psychophysiological and Cultural Correlates Undermining a Survivalist Interpretation of Near-Death Experiences" Defended

Description: Article responding to objections raised against another article. The author concedes some of the objections up to a point, but concludes that they neither strengthen the case for a survivalist interpretation of near-death experiences, nor weaken the case against one.

Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature

Description: Abstract: In this paper, we address an unfortunate growing trend involving misuse of quantum physics in psychic and healing literature, including literature on near-death experiences. After a brief introduction to quantum physics, we provide examples and explanations of misuse. Such misuse encourages undue skepticism of what might otherwise be valuable reading. We conclude with recommendations to authors and publishers about how to guard against this problem.

Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature: A Rejoinder

Description: Abstract: We provide a rejoinder to the responses of Chopra, Goswami, Kastrup, Radin, and van Lommel to our article "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature" that opens this journal issue. Our comments may be summarized in two main themes: These authors failed to recognize (a) how and why the von Neumann concept that only consciousness can collapse the quantum wavefunction has been largely rejected by physicists today and that quantum collapse is now understood to be able to occur without a cons… more

Quantum Physics as Analogy: A Response to "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature"

Description: Abstract: As one of the authors whose work the two retired physicists Jack A. Mroczkowski and Alexis P. Malozemoff (2019) discussed in their article "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature," which appears elsewhere in this journal issue, I appreciate the invitation to write this response. In it I will offer my views on quantum physics and the role of consciousness, further information about studies pertaining to near-death experiences (NDEs) and consciousness in general, and several quotations … more

Questions for the "Dying Brain Hypothesis"

Description: Abstract: I pose four questions for the "dying brain hypothesis" as propounded by Susan Blackmore in her book Dying to Live (1993). The first calls into question Blackmore's reductionist explanation of the "bird's-eye view" for a near-death experience (NDE) and asks why out-of-body perception from a supine position is not reported, given her theory. The second inquires as to how the materialist view explains NDErs' feelings of unconditional love, while the third ponders whether the variance a… more

Rationale and Considerations for Proposed Near-Death Research in the Hospital Setting

Description: Abstract: Further research into the question of veridical perception during the "naturalistic" near-death out-of-body experience (nND OBE), that phase of the near-death experience in which the experiencer seems to be perceiving a normal earthly realm, would be of value to NDErs, their caregivers, and humanity in general. I propose a research procedure that targets visual perception during nND OBEs that occur in the hospital setting. I discuss unresolved issues in the design and implementation… more

Reasonable Inferences from Quantum Mechanics: A Response to "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature"

Description: Abstract: This invited article is a response to the paper "Quantum Misuse in Psychic Literature," by Jack A. Mroczkowski and Alexis P. Malozemoff, published in this issue of the Journal of Near-Death Studies. Whereas I sympathize with Mroczkowski's and Malozemoff's cause and goals, and I recognize the problem that they attempted to tackle, I argue that their criticisms often overshot the mark and end up adding to the confusion. I address nince specific technical points that Mroczkowski and M… more

Recreating Near-Death Experiences: A Cognitive Approach

Description: Abstract: I describe a guided meditation that, when used by near-death experiencers (NDErs), recreates fragments of their NDEs. The meditation is based on Michael Persinger's neurological theory regarding the "God Experiences," and its success supports that theory. The present study included too few subjects to support quantitative analysis, and must be regarded as a pilot study.

The Reenchantment of Death: Near-Death, Death Awareness, and the New Age

Description: Article discussing a contextual question regarding the receptivity of the near-death phenomenon. This question concerns the social conditions that have popularized the discourse of the near-death experience. These conditions can be identified as the reenchantment of the world within the context of the New Age, the emergence of death awareness in a rapidly aging population, and the renewal of faith within the context of religious revivalism.

Reflections of Near-Death Experiences and Deathbed Visions: A Study of Nursing Faculty's Perceptions

Description: Abstract: Nursing faculty across the United States were surveyed about their knowledge, attitudes, and perspectives of near-death experiences (NDEs) and deathbed visions (DBVs) through web-based administration of the Near-Death Phenomena Knowledge and Attitudes Questionnaire (Thornburg, 1988). Of the approximately 550 responses, 13% of respondents indicated that they personally had experiences an NDE, 48% that they have cared for a patient reporting an NDE, and 46% that they have cared for a pa… more
