Seasonal Variations in Microflora of Four Denton County, Texas, Clay Soils

Description: This investigation has for its aim the confirmation of the correlation between soil moisture and the microflora of soils, and a lesser relation between the soil temperature and the microflora. The soils used in this study are typical clay soils of Denton County, Texas. The samples were taken from virgin pasture lands and analyses made monthly or semimonthly. The wide seasonal variation of temperature and rainfall afford a good opportunity for this study.

Selected Physiological and Biochemical Studies on Blue-Green Algae

Description: Twenty-two different unialgal clonal isolates have been obtained at random for experimental purposes over a period of about one year. Also, during this period, at least 12 other species or strains have been isolated into unialgal cultures which had not yet been identified and/or significantly cleared of heterotrophic contaminants.

The Sensitivity of Human Blood Plasma to the Coagulase Enzyme Secreted by Members of the Genus Micrococcus

Description: The problem in this investigation consisted of, first, the isolation from human sources and identification of thirteen cultures of typical micrococci to be used as test organisms; second, the acquisition of blood plasma from thirty different human beings; and third, the determination of the possibility of individual variation in sensitivity of blood plasma to the micrococci used as test organisms as revealed by the coagulase test.

Serological Characteristics of Coagulase Positive and Negative Staphylococci

Description: For this work, the decision was made to contrast two serological tests, that of the tube agglutination technique and the fluorescent antibody technique for correlation with the coagulase and other characteristics of Staphylococcus strains. This has been a preliminary survey in the hope that as further knowledge is obtained about the staphylococci, grouping of the organisms will become more routine and relatively less complex.

Serological Characterization of Members of the Genus Streptomyces

Description: This investigation involved isolation and characterization of specific antigenic materials from known species of Streptomyces. The resulting antigens were then used to establish serological relationships between a number of different species. These groupings were, in turn, compared with similar studies recently established by the ISP, in which other taxonomic criteria were used. By these means, the serological characteristics of the Streptomyces were evaluated for their potential utility as add… more

A Serological Study of the Antigenic Fractions of the Aerobic Actinomycetes

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to alleviate this confusion by first testing means of separating the antigenic components of the aerobic actinomycetes--obtaining, if possible, a monospecific antigen. Antisera produced from these monospecific antigens will then be tested for their possible use in the serological grouping of the aerobic actinomycetes.

Short Term Effects of External Electric Fields on Electrical Activity of the Pineal Gland in Rats

Description: The effects of short term exposure (5 minutes) to EEFs at relatively high dosages (10, 25, 39, kV/m) on the electrical activity in rat pineal glands was studied. Daytime and nighttime recordings were taken from an implanted microelectrode in the gland. The data show that (1) both the activity and frequency were enhanced when the animals were exposed to EEFs at 39 kV/m continuously and discontinuously; (2) the later condition yielded a sustained increase (36%) whereas the former a brief (10 sec)… more

A Solution for High Bacterial Counts in a Local Dairy, Denton, Texas

Description: It is the aim of this investigation to determine through routine checks if the bacterial count in the milk from Brooks Dairy Company is high and if so to determine the source. If it is found that the laboratory plate counts are unnecessarily high, it is the further purpose of this paper to make recommendations for improvements in the quality of milk produced by this dairy plant.

Some Effects of X-Irradiaion on the Adrenal Response to Hypothalamic Stimulation in Rats

Description: Exactly where in the hypothalamus is the adrenal-pituitary response to X-irradiation "triggered" or initiated? Moreover, does ionizing radiation act directly on specific centers in the brain or does it act indirectly via the production of some humoral agents? Finally, what role does the hypothalamus play in the radiation-syndrome? The purpose of the present study was to attempt to answer these questions by determining the effects of two stressor agents, X-irradiation and electrical stimulation … more

Some Effects of X-irradiation on Oxygen Uptake and Serotonin Levels in Rat Brain Tissue Slices

Description: The aim of this study is to determine the changes in respiration in tissues from specific brain areas X-irradiated in vitro using a direct monometric procedure also to determine the differences in radiosensitivity of specific areas in the brain as reflected by changes in oxygen uptake and to shed some light on the nature of the biochemical lesions in nerve tissues brought about by ionizing radiation.

Some Effects of X-irradiation on the Plasma Corticosterone, Adrenal Weights, and Differential Leukocyte Count in the Rat

Description: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (1) to determine if X-irradiation can be considered a direct stress agent, and if so, to what extent it differs from other stressors; and (2) to further elucidate the role of the adrenal cortex in the radiation syndrome by determining the more immediate responses of this system to X-irradiation.

Some Relationships between Certain Aquatic Actinomycetes and Bacillus Cereus

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine if there was a metabolic relationship between the actinomycetes and the gram positive, spore-forming becilli in surface waters, and, if such a relationship was evident, to relate the association to the disappearances of typical actinomycete tastes and odors from waters.

Spatially Explicit Modeling of West Nile Virus Risk Using Environmental Data

Description: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging infectious disease that has widespread implications for public health practitioners across the world. Within a few years of its arrival in the United States the virus had spread across the North American continent. This research focuses on the development of a spatially explicit GIS-based predictive epidemiological model based on suitable environmental factors. We examined eleven commonly mapped environmental factors using both ordinary least squares regress… more

Spring Food Habits of Corydalus Cornutus L. in the Brazos River, Texas

Description: The objective of this study was to determine the kinds and numbers of food organisms consumed by Corydalus cornutus, and to investigate its periodicity of feeding during the spring months in the Brazos River, Palo Pinto County, Texas. A total of 468 larvae were collected at two-week intervals from February 29 to May 14, 1971. Larvae were taken at opportunity during three periods of the day, 6am.-12pm., 12pm.-6pm., and 6pm.-12am. A total of 23 different food items was observed in the 121 stomach… more
