Victims of "adaptation": climate change, sacred mountains, and perverse resilience

Description: This article proposes the concept of "perverse adaptation", where one actor or institution's adaptation to climate change in fact produces aftershocks and secondary impacts upon other groups. Drawing on ethnographic and sociolinguistic research in northern Arizona regarding artificial snowmaking at a ski resort on a sacred mountain, the author elucidates resort supporters' and others' attempts to frame snowmaking as a sustainable adaptation to drought (and, implicitly, climate change) while cou… more

Multiple levers for overcoming the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass

Description: The article evaluates the impacts of physical, chemical and genetic interventions to improve biomass processing singly and in combination. Based on their results and literature studies, some form of non-biological augmentation will likely be necessary for the foreseeable future to achieve high total carbohydrate solubilization (TCS) for most cellulosic feedstocks. The results show that this need not necessarily involve thermochemical processing, and need not necessarily occur prior to biologica… more

Rapid Responses to Abiotic Stress: Priming the Landscape for the Signal Transduction Network

Description: This article proposes that a plant's ability to engage in many different metabolic and molecular networks as well as alter stomatal aperture in order to adapt to their environment is mediated through pulses of gene expression that are coordinated throughout the plant in a systemic manner by the ROS/Ca+2 waves.

Continued Usage and Location Disclosure of Location-Based Applications: A Necessity for Location Intelligence

Description: This article's research builds a continuance usage and location disclosure model from the expectation-confirmation perspective. The effect of benefit expectations on usefulness and satisfaction is hypothesized. In addition, the positive effect of usefulness on satisfaction and continuance intention is postulated. Findings contribute to the current literature in business intelligence by focusing on location disclosure behavior in the context of LBAs and the necessity of this type of information… more

Establishing Cost-Effective Computational Models for the Prediction of Lanthanoid Binding in [Ln(NO3)]2+ (with Ln = La to Lu)

Description: This article is a study evaluating the predictive capabilities of various ab initio methods in the calculation of Gibbs free energies of reaction for [Ln(NO₃)]²⁺ compounds (with Ln = La to Lu), as nitrates are critical in traditional separation processes utilizing nitric acid. The composite methodologies evaluated predict Gibbs free energies of reaction for [Ln(NO₃)]²⁺ compounds within 5 kcal mol⁻¹ in most cases from the target method [CCSD(T)-FSII/cc-pwCV∞Z-DK3+SO] at a fraction of the computa… more
