Knowledge Representation and Subject Access in Electronic Theses and Dissertations: Analysis of Creators’ and Users’ Assumptions and Expectations

Description: This paper analyzes the relationship between subject terms -- both authorized terms from controlled vocabularies and free-text keywords -- used to succinctly describe the content of the electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) and the search terms entered by users to discover and access the ETDs. Identification of search terms and comparison of search results with subject terms used in describing ETDs provides a basis for assessing the relative usefulness of controlled-vocabulary subject term… more

Prioritizing riparian corridors for ecosystem restoration in urbanizing watersheds

Description: This article explores restoration, rather than protection, being the basis for developing a watershed level strategy for improving water quality in urbanizing watersheds. This study uses a geographical information system (GIS) approach that utilizes riparian characteristics extracted from 40-meter wide corridors centered on streams and rivers. The model was applied to 90 sub-watersheds in the watershed of an important drinking water reservoir in north central Texas, USA.

Strategies for Increasing Findabilitiy of Language Data

Description: Poster discussing practical methods for ensuring the quality of descriptive metadata associated with linguistic datasets in language archive deposits. Digital language archives are valuable tools for facilitating language revitalization, providing data on lesser-known languages, and supporting reproducibility of research and development of linguistic theory, though their potential remains unrealized as the data available in language archives are rarely accessed by linguists or language communit… more

Reactive oxygen species, abiotic stress and stress combination

Description: This article reviews recent studies on the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in abiotic stress in plants, and propose that different abiotic stresses, such as drought, heat, salinity and high light, result in different ROS signatures that determine the specificity of the acclimation response and help tailor it to the exact stress the plant encounters.

Re-evaluation of rate constants for the reaction N2H4 (+ M) ⇄ NH2 + NH2 (+ M)

Description: Article describes how rate constants for the dissociation/recombination reaction N2H4 (+ M) ⇄ NH2 + NH2 (+ M) are determined by a combination of quantum-chemical calculations and statistical unimolecular rate theory. Implications of the present re-evaluated rate constants for the modeling of high temperature ammonia oxidation kinetics are discussed, showing an only small influence of their precise values on the overall properties of the process.
