HOUSTON — Annise Parker was sworn in as
the 61st mayor of the city of Houston in a private
ceremony at City Hall on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Apublic oath was administered at the Wortham
Theater Center on Monday, Jan. 4 before a stand-
ing-room-only crowd.
The Houston city charter specifies that transfer
of power must take place on Jan. 2.
But Parker chose the private ceremony on Sat-
urday to avoid overtime costs and interrupting
city workers' holiday weekend.
The Jan. 4 public ceremony began at 9:30 a.m.
Parker's partner Kathy Hubbard stood by her side
and held the family Bible as U.S. District Judge
Vanessa Giimore administered the oath of office.
fn the afternoon, Parker chaired her first city
council meeting as mayor.
On Monday evening, a free three-hour concert
featuring Jennifer Holliday took place at Discov-
ery Green, a park downtown, in near-freezing
weather. Mango Punch, Yvonne Washington, Roy
Head and Archie Bell were among the other per-
formers.
Addressing LGBT supporters over the week-
end, Parker said, "I am more excited than you can
imagine; more proud than you will ever know to
be the second woman mayor of Houston, the sec-
ond city council member to ever become mayor of
Houston, the second city controller to become
mayor of Houston and the first gay or lesbian
mayor of a major American city."
The crowd held its excitement as she began her

Group says candidates seeking its
backing will face tougher standards
JOHN WRIGHT I News Editor

With a slew of contested primaries on tap in
March, Stonewall Democrats of Dallas plans to
make it tougher this year for candidates to secure
the group's backing.
Stonewall, which bills itself as the largest Dem-
ocratic group in North Texas, will hold its candi-
date endorsement screenings for the primaries
Jan. 14-16 at Resource Center Dallas.
An unprecedented number of candidates are
expected to geek
Stonewall's endorsement in
2010, and several races fea-
ture multiple members of
the group squaring off
against one another.
Stonewall Democrats
President Erin Moore said
that in the past, candidates
could sometimes receive
the group's backing if they
merely pledged to "do no harm" to the LGBT
community.
"We're sort of upping the bar, to where a neu-
tral position may not be acceptable anymore,"
Moore said this week. "At the very least you'd
need to be an ally or an advocate. Because there
are so many contested races, we've got a real
chance here to strengthen the LGBT movement."
Moore said the new, tougher standards will
also apply to incumbents and other candidates
who've fficeived the group's endorsement in pre-
vious years.
