The 30-in. bubble ch.ber vas brought to SAL from M.L to serve
as an initial unique detector to look fcr neu high energy
phenomena. This program has produced 195,000 pictures in
FY 1973. It has also become evident that good experiments
can be done with the 30-in. bubble clwuber in combination with
upsereao and dvnstrea counter and spark chuasher arrays.
There are is university groups involved in there hybrid
exmariCents. The present plan is for the chamber to he in
eparation almost continuously.
This bubble ca.=ber, originally built at hUSA and pvevlously
operated at A=;ofne, is located at the end of Ithdron .eam M3
in the Neutrino Area. The facility includes tnggInt; capabilities
for incoming braa particles using proportional wins chambers
for deterrinino particle direction and Crrcnkov counters for
rass identification. Systems for downstrca-a tagging of
secondary-particles are also being developed.
The chasrer sensitive volua consists of a 30-in. diameter
cylinder, 15-in. deep. Expansion is provided by three 6-in.
diameter pistons :s the toy, which have shan good multiple
pulsing cpabAlitics. h: r.;sretic field at the cnter of the
chaber is 30 kilczauss with the cr.art operating at 18,000
aparcs. The cha-ber has dark field illumtination, with n
separate flash cube for each of four vics. Normally. these
vieus are photographed directly with separate cam.ras using
35 : sprocketcd filn. For spacial exposures an alternative
forr.t is available in which the four views are nirsorod to
rive adjacent Im.,jas on one reel of 70cs eproeketcd file.

Fig. 111-12 illustrates the l. beam layout and location of
the 30-in, and 15-fs. bubble chambers.
Table 111-4 susarises the design features of the chamber.-
