20/Academics
Academic Standards
Minimum standards have been set
which a student must achieve at
the end of a given enrollment period in
order to remain in good standing.
A Table of Academic Standards
and definitions of "Classifica-
tion" and "Minimum CGPA" follow.
Classification for the purpose
of establishing the minimum CGPA
requirement for each student is
determined by the sum of all hours
attempted in residence in
regularly-graded courses at NTSU,
hours passed in pass-fail graded
courses at NTSU, and hours
transferred from other institutions.
Not included in the definition of
student classification for academic
standards are hours granted by
this university for extension and
correspondence courses, service
experience, advanced placement,
credit by examination, or transfer
hours attempted but not passed.
The CGPA upon which academic
standards are based is calcu-
lated by dividing the total number
of grade points earned in
residence at NTSU by the total
number of hours attempted in resi-
dence at NTSU. Excluded in this
calculation are all courses in which
the student received grades of NP,
P, Q, W, I, or WP. The cumulative
grade-point average as defined
here is used only for determining a
student's academic status and
is not necessarily related to the
grade-point average which gov-
erns eligibility for graduation.
In calculating grade points,
grades count as follows: A, four
points per semester hour; B, three
points; C, two points; D, one point;
E, F, WF, WX, and X, zero points.
A student will be placed on
academic probation at the end
of any enrollment period in which the
CGPA on work attempted in resi-
dence at this University does not
equal or exceed the minimum
specified for his classification in the
Table of Academic Standards.Table of Academic Standards
The following is a listing of the
minimum NTSU cumulative grade point
average (CGPA) required to remain
a student in good standing. The
CGPA is based upon hours attempted
at NTSU plus any transfer hours
accepted.
30 hours or less, 1.20 CGPA
31 to 40 hours, 1.33 CGPA
41 to 50 hours, 1.47 CGPA
51 to 60 hours, 1.60 CGPA
61 to 70 hours, 1.73 CGPA
71 to 80 hours, 1.87 CGPA
80 hours or more, 2.00
Academic Standards
for Transfer Students
Transfer students admitted to NTSU
in good standing are subject to
the same academic regulations as
continuing students. .A transfer
student whose grade-point average
on all work attempted at NTSU
does not meet the minimum specified
will be placed on academic
probation for the next period of
enrollment.
Transfer students admitted to NTSU
on academic probation are either
cleared from probation or sus-
pended at the end of their first
semester in attendance. To avoid
suspension, the student must
make a grade point average equal
to or exceeding the minimum for
the appropriate classification as
shown in the Table of Academic
Standards.Notes for transfers and former
students: Grade points earned at other
institutions are excluded in the
computations of the CGPA, but hours
transferred are included in deter-
mining the classification and
minimum required level of
performance.
Former students of NTSU who are
re-admitted after attending another
institution must meet the same
minimum academic standards as
continuing students. Depending
upon the latest academic status at
NTSU, a former student may be
re-admitted in good standing or on
probation, or denied re-admission
on the basis of work at other
institutions.
Additional information concerning
academic status is available from
the offices of the academic deans.
Academic Status
of Withdrawing Students
Any student who is allowed to
withdraw from NTSU will receive
grades of W and will not be penalized
with a reduced CGPA. A student
who does not officially withdraw from
the university will be held respon-
sible for grades of F and will be
placed on probation or suspended
from the university if the grades
of F bring the CGPA below the
minimum required.
