The School of Music at North Texas State College, accredited by
the National Association of Music Schools for graduate as well as
undergraduate study, has a threefold purpose. In the first place, it en-
deavors to supply a good musical "climate" for the entire college and
community. Numerous recitals, faculty and student, concerts by per-
forming organizations and a Fine Arts series give every music lover on
the campus opportunity for recreation and musical growth.
In the second place, it is the responsibility of the School to offer
opportunities for students who do not wish to major in music but desire
to have opportunity for further musical experience and expression by
participating in bands, orchestras, choirs, et cetera, and through indi-
vidual study of voice, piano, organ, et cetera. Many of these students
take regular courses in theory, appreciation, and history of music.
The third and most difficult function of the School is to train pro-
fessional musicians and professional teachers of music. For this under-
taking, curricula have been made covering the whole field of music
study in both undergraduate and graduate levels. The principal areas
of music study are: (1) for majors in composition, church music, music-
ology, and dance bands, (2) for majors in piano, voice, organ, and or-
chestral and band instruments, and (3) for majors in vocal and instru-
mental music education.
The following degrees are offered:
Bachelor of Music
Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Science in Music Education
Master of Music
Master of Arts
Master of Science
Master of Music Education
Doctor of Philosophy in the fields of:
Musicology
