progressive teacher are doing mch to harmonize philosophy
and application. In the shifting of aMphauis from formal
arrangement of subject matter to activities the program
guiding the daily practices of the teacher and the children
had to be reorganized. The organisation of classroom work
around large centers of interest make a flexible daity pre-
gram not only desirable but inevitable. Progressive schools
found it quite impossible to follow short, brief, periods
devoted to recitations of a number of unrelated subjects.
Emphasis is necessarily placed on the growth achieved by the
children rather than covering a certain amount of subjeot
matter. 20
We want children to grow in the ability to think
clearly and honestly, in the ability to plan before
undertaking an enterprise in which they are interested.
We want them to develop in initiative and self-
reliane. Than we must arrange their days so that
when a problem arises they will have time- plenty of
it- to solve that problem then and there or at
least to plan a procedure by which they can solve
it soon.
We want them to experience life riohly so that
their eapaeities for enjoyment and happiness will
be large. There-fore we must provide sufficient
time for enlarging their store of interests.---
We want ohildren to develop poise, to gain and
preserve mental and physical health. We must so
arrange their school days that all hrry and strain
are eliminated; we mast provide enough time for
both physical and mental rest and we must observe
a wholesome sequence in tho days activities.
We know that children need to acquire the
tools of leaning. Aoerdingly we must see to it
that they have plenty of efficient practice in
reaing, in the use of nabers, in writing, in
