MEMORANDUM FOR THE WORKING LEAD, ARMAMENTS AND MUNITIONS SUB-
GROUP OF THE INDUSTRIAL JOINT CROSS SERVICE GROUP
Subj: MARINE CORPS REQUIREMENTS FOR 20-YEAR FORCE STRUCTURE
MUNITIONS PRODUCTION AND STORAGE
Ref: (a) IJCSG Munitions and Armaments Sub-group Working Lead
memo of 8 Oct 04
1. In response to reference (a), which requests an assessment of
the impact of the 20-Year Force Structure Plan on previously
submitted data, the Marine Corps has reviewed its data and
determined that in aggregate the data is consistent with
anticipated requirements.
2. The 20-Year Force Structure Plan depicts transformation of
the Marine Corps' platform mix. We foresee a corresponding
transformation of the weapons inventory. This will lead to
elimination of certain weapons and addition of new ones that have
yet to be developed. Consequently, production capabilities for
some weapons will be eliminated and new ones will be established.
One common characteristic of emerging munitions designs is
increased effectiveness achieved through incorporation of smart
technology or advanced materials, or both. While it is not
possible to predict the exact mix of munitions and their specific
production requirements over the next 20 years, the Marine Corps
expects that the aggregate munitions production requirements as
reflected in our previous data responses are adequate to support
the 20-year force structure.
3. With regard to munitions storage, the Marine Corps expects
that the munitions inventory to support the future force
structure will not be larger in volume than the munitions storage
requirements reflected in our previously submitted data.
Therefore, the Marine Corps expects that its previously submitted
data is adequate to support the 20-year force structure plan.
4. The Marine Corps point of contact on this matter is Maj Adam
Coons, HQMC (LFL), 703-695-9102.
