ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
For Achan, Amma and Satish.
This wouldn't have been possible without my committee. My chair Shawne Miksa, for
her unstinting encouragement and support over the years. Oksana Zavalina for making me a part
of her research projects, and for giving me the opportunity to be her teaching assistant/fellow.
The two of them took me under their wing and I can't thank them enough for all their guidance
over the years. Brian O'Connor for being my "provocation to thought" and Gary Burnett, for
giving me the push I needed to go ahead and study a fan community.
To the incredible group of women I found online without whom this wouldn't have taken
off the ground. The ladies of the "Blast from the past" thread especially Indi di and Isskiya for
their friendship, stimulating conversations and music. Meera30 for her generosity of spirit and
her riverside. The Sanki Behenas some of whom opened their hearts and mind to me. My
gratitude to the two Anus, the two Kavis, Mau, Sandy, Raji, Sohniye, Divzy, A&B of H, Ruchi,
Vinny, Hansa, Anitha and Lavzy. I'm indebted to you all.
My parents for being the bedrock of my life. Satish, my husband, the wind beneath my
wings. Thank you for your love and patience. The girls of my cohort, there couldn't be a better
set of people to share this journey with. Special shout out to Janette Klein for her friendship and
for paving the way for me to take those two sociology courses.
I want to acknowledge and thank Dr. Tim Gorichanaz for reaching out to me at a time
when I was floundering, and sharing insights on his work with me. Thanks to Dr. O'Connor for
putting me in touch with Dr. Kiersten Latham and through her with Tim.
Lastly, two fictional characters (and the actors who played them) who flagged off the
most unlikely of journeys. Arnav & Khushi, Hamesha!iii
