ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First, and foremost, I want to give all honor to God for giving me the strength and
courage to put this work together. Without him in my life, all of these years, I don't know where
I would be.
I thank my family/friends who were absolutely integral in pushing me to ask the tough
questions, and constantly encouraging me to continue moving forward:
" To Dr. Ezzani and Dr. Murakami for pushing my thinking, and this study, to new heights.
I also thank my committee members for their support.
" To my wife, Kristin, who has helped me be a better person over the years, thank you for
being patient with me during this process. From the missed quality time on the
weekends, to being absent at concerts because of classes, or just general administrator
duties, you stuck it out. Complained a little bit, but stuck it out. And for that, I am
eternally grateful for your love.
" To Dr. Givens for pushing me out of the school to get to class in either Dallas or Denton,
or giving me your stories about how you did it with a car with no air conditioning and
two small kids. Just know that you were a big part in making this thing happen. To Jana
for being an absolutely amazing partner in crime. You always know what to say in order
to get me moving when I am feeling down. I know that you are going to be an amazing
mom to Bodie.
" To Mr. Chapman, Mrs. Martin, Dr. Harrington, Mr. and Mrs. Harris, for giving me the
opportunity to complete the study.
Finally, this work would not have taken place if it wasn't for a certain individual that
took me in my sophomore year of high school with zero high school credits. She believed in me
and pushed me to be the absolute best little boy that I could be. She taught me that if I was going
to do something, I had to do it to the best of my ability and to never settle for anything else. Rest
in peace to Hazel Barrett, my beloved grandmother. Now that I got that out of the way, let's get
it!iii
