THE JUNIOR BLACK ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS, INCORPORATED
is a Texas non-profit organization which is modeled after
the American Negro Academy (1897) and the Black Academy of
Arts and Letters (1969). Since the organization's inception
on July 17, 1977 its primary objectives have been: to sti-
mulate an increased awareness of black accomplishments,
rooted in the African Culture, among both the Black and
White communities; and to identify, encourage, and support
young and promising talented artists and scholars in the
area of black arts and letters. To fulfill these objectives
a group of aspiring artists are presently involved with the
newly organized professional touring company, the Third
World Players.
The Players volunteer 20 hours a week sharpening their artistic
skills for community performances and major tours. Last year
the company toured with Loften Mitchell's play "Tell Pharoah"
in cities such as New Orleans, La.; Selma, Ala.; Raleigh, N.C.
and New York City.
The Third World Players work under the Academy's Theater
component which will be coordinated by Sharon West. Other
areas in the Junior Black Academy will be directed and depart-
mentalized in several broad components based on some of the
general ideas of the old academic humanities concept. These
components will include Arts (visual and plastic) which will
be coordinated by James Kemp, Music by James Pleasant, Literature
by B.F. Maiz, Dance, Film, Television, Photography and Scholastics.
