As I write the twelfth "From the Dean"
column since coming to the University
of North Texas, I think a good
theme would be "Looking
Ahead: Reaching Back." There
have been dramatic changes
in the School of Library and
Information Sciences as we have
attempted to respond to the
needs of the profession. The
impact of emerging digital and
telecommunications technolo-
gies on the storage and retrieval
of information and knowledge
has been profound. At the same
time, libraries are facing the
most severe shortage of professionals in
memory. A comparison of the Texas 1990
and 2000 census results demonstrates a pro-
found change in demographics and points
out one of our most significant challenges.
SLIS responded to these needs by develop-
ing programs of study that provide the
knowledge base to lead in the utilization
of emerging technologies. Our Information
Systems and Digital Image Management
programs of study have strong enrollments.
The Youth Librarianship program of study
and its partner Academic Certificate in
Youth Services, are aimed at addressing the
dire shortage of professionals prepared to
work with youth in our libraries. The Texas
Center for Digital Knowledge has received
close to $2,000,000 in externally-funded
research this year and has emerged as a
leading research center for metadata and
digital image research.
We have reached out with our Master's
Program and our students reside through-
out the State. At the same time, we havecontinued to support students who want
to study full-time on campus by supporting
over sixty students through
research, development, and
teaching projects.
We are delighted that Dr.
Maurice Wheeler, Director
of the Detroit Public Library,
will be joining our faculty
this fall (see p. 8). He is filling a
i _ _ new position with the theme,
"Public Library Service in
Diverse Communities." We
are looking forward to Dr.
Wheeler's impact on public
libraries in Texas. The diversity of our stu-
dent body has increased significantly as we
have reached out across the State. We are
very proud that our faculty is among the
most diverse in the country.
With all of these changes, we recognize that
we must continue to reach back to our
alumni for guidance and support. In October,
we held a reunion of the graduates of the
Bachelor of Arts program with alumni
returning from throughout the United States.
This spring, Dr. Ana Cleveland led an effort
to put together a wonderful alumni reunion
in Houston. Over half of the graduates of
the Houston Program were there! We are
planning a reunion in the fall in Denton for
our Master's Program 1970's grads.
There are so many good things going on
at SLIS that no column can contain all of
the news. I do need to extend special
thanks to those of you whose generosity
helped us to conduct a very successful
Capital Campaign. As always, if I can be
of assistance to you, please let me know.IMAGE MANAGEMENT ..........................18
