RECENT PUBLICATIONS
A new one from the regular Hillside
Press of Franklin, N.H. is NURSERY
RHYMES, published in 1967. This is a
collection of such rhymes from the tenth
to the twentieth century, with a lengthy
historical introduction and ten excellent
illustrations. It is forty-four pages long,
measures 2 3/8 by 2 inches and comes
bound in pictorial orange cloth boards.
Price is $4.50.
Two items from a private press in Baltimore
have just come to our attention,
THE RAVEN, by Edger A. Poe, and SOMEBODY'S
MOTHER, by Mary Dow Brine.
Both were printed and bound by A. Wirth
of Baltimore, Md. THE RAVEN has twentytwo
pages, measures 2 1/2 by 2 inches,
dated 1966, and is bound in bright red
rubberoid, gilt stamped, sells for $5.00.
SOMEBODY'S MOTHER is "dedicated to
all Good Mothers everywhere," has twenty
pages, 2 3/16 by 1 5/8 inches, also red
rubberoid, sells for $2.50.
Two similar sets have just been issued
to supplement the handsome ROMA MINIMA
group that was described in MBN 7.
Both were printed by Editalia in Rome,
1967, contain five volumes each, bound in
brown calf, gilt stamped, which slide into
specially fitted matching leather standing
slip cases, resembling book cases. All
books measure 1 11/16 by 1 3/8 inches,
contain sixty pages, printed in Italian,
and have illustrations.
The first Editalia set is entitled ITINERARI
ROMANI, and contains the following
titles: Goethe; Bernini; D'Annunzio;
Trilussa; Raffaello. These deal with the
Roman travels of those famous writers
mentioned in the titles, and the books
themselves have illustrations of many of
Rome's beautiful fountains and other landmarks.MILANO MINIMA is the second set,
andits five volumes have poems, proverbs,
essays, etc. about the city of Milan. Titles
are: Poesia Milanese; Satira Meneghina;
4Amore di Milano; Stornelli Milanesi; Proverbi
Milanesi, and illustrations are taken
from Italy's most important industrial city,
Milan.
At this writing, we are not aware of
these two sets being available in North
America, but they can be purchased at the
Rizzoli Book Store, Via Veneto, Rome, for
$14.00 per set.
The historic and colorful city of Perigueux
in the region of Perigord in Southwest
France gave birth to four delightful
miniature books in 1966. One is about the
region itself, entitled PERIGORD, contains
descriptions and several line cuts
of the area's medieval chateaux, churches,
grottos, etc. Another, GASTRONOMIE EN
PERIGORD, is a cook book of many recipes
and dishes that have made the region
and city renown gastronomically. Sauce
Perigueux comes from here, for example.
The two others from Perigueux deal
with subjects of love, poetically and historically:
BELLES AMOURS DU TEMPS
JADIS, and POEMS D'AMOURS.
All but PERIGORD contain frontispiece
illustrations only. All four books measure
1 3/4 by 1 3/8 inches, have ninety-four
pages, were published by Pierre Fanlac in
Perigueux in 1966, and are identically
gilt stamped over red, green, blue, and
black smooth morocco calfskin bindings.
The bookseller, L & J.H. Pinault, 36,
rue Bonaparte, Paris 6e, France can supply
copies of the above at $3.00 each.
SCHMIDT AND GUNTHER
The firm of Schmidt and Gunther published
many miniature volumes in Leipzig,
Germany during the first years of this century.
Their little dictionaries in many languages
are legion, and were the forerunners
of the extensive Lilliput Series published
today by Langenscheidt in Munich.
Among the miniatures originated by
Schmidt and Gunther was a series of classics
by German authors. Shakespeare was
the only non-German to make the grade.
Published between 1907 and 1911, works
in this series measure 2 by 1-3/8 inches.
