NATUEs AN) PUPOSE OF THE IVESTIGaTION
Introduction. Long before man began to live in what is now termed
civilized groups, he lived by means of physical activity. His acts,
emotions, and ideas were expressed in this simple existence through the
activities of his body.
Thus, through the long and age-old struggle for existence, physiol
activity has always played its part in the life of man. With each step
of progress in civilisation man, through his activities, has been the
center or the essential building stone in the progress.
The ever varying civilised set-ups had perhaps modified the lines of
direction of this motion; nevertheless, the activity itself still remained
the means of expression and development of each phase in the individual's
life.
Physical activity of nan was the constant deteminer of the physical
activity of a nation. A nation was omposed of numerous organised groups
of individuals which individual remained the core of that nation. Failure
to realise this fact meant that a basic understanding of national ideals
could not be obtained. Since this is true of the nation, it must be
true of the individual.
The line of dirootion of that activity, which was char:cterised by
ideals, varied with the rise and fall of each succeeding nation. The
Greek ideal reached its pinnacle in the effort to produce physical per-
footion; however, due to changes in economic and oultural emphases,
this ideal found few followers in the later ages. Thus weakened bodies
