Notes

"Act I: In the grand hall of the Capulet palace a masked ball is in progress. Tybalt is speaking to Comte Pâris about Juliette, who just then appears accompanied by her father, mother, and nursemaid. Roméo, Mercutio, Benvolio, Stéphano and some followers arrive in masks. Because of the deadly feud between the two houses, the uninvited Montaigus decide to attend the Capulet party for good sport. As the Montaigus exit to another part of the palace, Juliette, full of spirits, returns with her nurse Gertrude. The latter is called away for a moment and Roméo and Juliette happen to meet. Their mutual attraction is instantaneous. Tybalt enters and Roméo quickly replaces his mask. But Tybalt's suspicions are aroused, and Juliette, to her grief, learns that the youth she is so attracted to is a Montaigu. Tybalt is all for revenge, but old Capulet respecting the laws of hospitality, orders that the ball proceed." College of Music program book 2007-2008 Ensemble & Other Performances Vol. 1, Page 264
