COLLOQUIA
A new program was instituted in the Library Service Department during the spring
semester when Dr. Sparks planned a series of colloquia. Tuesday and Thursday mornings
at 11:00 were kept free of classes for all L.S. students so the meetings could be planned
for maximum attendance. Tape recordings were made by our "tape technician" William
Floyd, so we have a permanent record of all these challenging talks.
The first colloquiumwas held on February 22 with a talk on public libraries by Mrs.
Lillian Bradshaw, Director of the Dallas Public Library. With such a vivacious and in-
formative speaker, our colloquia were launched auspiciously. Other speakers were (Feb.
29) Maryann Duggan, Director of Industrial Information Services, Science Information
Center, Southern Methodist University; (March 5)Mr. Theodore Doehner, Queens Borough
Public Library; (March 7)Miss Virginia Ruppersberg, NewYork Public Library; (March 14)
Mr. Kenneth L. Fahlberg, Brooklyn Public Library; (March 26) Mr. Paul Vagt (B.A.,NTSU
1949), Librarian of Tarrant County Junior College, Fort Worth, speaking on junior
college libraries; (April 23) Mr. Travis Tyer (B.S. in L.S., NTSU 1959) Lubbock Public
Library, speaking on library work with young adults. OnApril 9, George Truett Har-
desty, formerly director of our bindery and nowa vice-president (didyou know this?
Very recent') of the New Method Book Bindery, came from Jacksonville, Illinois, and
presented the Library Binding Institute's Silver Book Award to our Dr. Sarah Law
Kennerly. She was recognized for the three successful NDEA institutes she has con-
ducted the past three summers, and for having her proposal accepted for a fourth Institute
in 1968 (HEA, this time). To bring the series toa fitting close, Dr. DavidA.Webb,
Director of Libraries at NTSU, and formerly also Director of the Library Service Depart-
ment, showed slides and talked about the planningof the new library building for NTSU.
The construction which was supposed to have started last November will begin this spring
or summer and the first unit is scheduled to be completed in 1970. The other two units
will followat approximately two-year intervals. Miss Virginia Miller, director of
PROJECT IMPACT in Lubbock, who was to have spoken on March 21 had to cancel her talk
because all planes were grounded because of snow!
