CALL
NUMBER
Margaret Irby Nichols, Editor
Looking back
over the fifteen
"Dean's Columns"
that I have written
in the past seven
years, I find that
they are a record of
the accomplishments of the wonderful faculty
and staff with whom I have had the good
fortune to work. They also reflect the quality
of students and alumni who have succeeded
in such a wide variety of library and informa-
tion careers. I know that you share my pride
in the University of North Texas School of
Library and Information Sciences.
The School has changed in many ways
in the past six years. Over half of the faculty
has arrived during that time. In 1996, no SLIS
course was delivered electronically. In a rela-
tively short period of time, this school has
emerged as a national leader in the delivery
of Web-based instruction with a wide variety
of programs of study available in an online or
blended format. Master's Program enrollment
has risen over 200% with students residing
throughout Texas and in all four time zones.
This spring, there are more than 90 students
living in El Paso and 80 in San Antonio. The
majority of these students are pursing their
degree through the Web Institute.
This year, I had the pleasure of seeing
many of you during what has come to be
known as "SLIS Visits." During these visits,
representatives from the School have the
opportunity of meeting potential students,
current students, graduates, and leaders in
the profession. By the time you read this,
we will have "visited" Houston, El Paso,
Lubbock, San Antonio, and McAllen in Texas.
I also visited potential and current students
in Bismarck and Fargo, North Dakota. I chose
the wrong weekend and encountered 11-
degree weather with wind gusts over 30
mph. However, the welcome was warm, andI thoroughly enjoyed myself. Look for the
story in this issue for more information.
Despite these changes, our core values
are still in place. There are more full-time
residential students than there were in 1996.
This year, we awarded more than a quarter
of a million dollars in student support for
full-time residential students. Much of this
support was made possible by two million
dollars in externally funded research and
development grants received by the faculty.
Interestingly, the majority of the funding was
generated through teaching assistantships to
create and deliver online instruction.This
symbiotic relationship between the residen-
tial and online programs was unexpected
but very beneficial.
On the negative side, the predicted
hit to state funding in Texas occurred in
February with even more severe cuts ahead
for the 2003-2005 biennium. SLIS is well
positioned to weather and thrive within
these tough economic times. Our entrepre-
neurial activities allow us to generate over
half of the School's budget. Our enrollment
growth has positioned the School in a very
positive light within the University. As an
example, while all hiring was frozen at a
university-wide level, five faculty searches
were allowed to go forward including one
for SLIS. We have concluded a successful
search for a faculty member in the
Information System Program of Study.
I conclude by hoping that this issue of
Call Number finds each of you prospering
both personally and professionally. Our suc-
cess has been in large measure due to your
support for the School and your success in
your professional lives.Thank you and please
let us know if we can be of assistance to you.
