EDIT OR IAL
With the observance of Children's Book Week this year, November 11-17,
the Children:s Book Council marked its first birthday, The council is
sponsored by the publishers of juvenile books through the Association of
Childrents Book Editors and is directed by Laura Harris. Miss Harris
states that "it is the work of the council to promote, persuade and help
everyone working with books and reading everywhere, by any and all means,
to provide more books for more children.* The slogan this year, 'United
Through Books," was repeated from 1944 but the poster designed by Gertrude
Howe was new.
Betty Wion carried out this slogan very effectively in her bulletin
board just outside the cataloging office; jackets of books about every
country were displayed around the jacket for Theodore Eramelds DESIGN
FOR AMERICA. (Betty s latest bulletin board, by the way, is a full-course
Thanksgiving dinner - food for thought, in other words. The piece de
resistance is THE WISDOM OF ISRAZL, with lighter reading fare recommended
for the other courses.)
In honor of Book Week and the Southwest Book Fair the Library Forum
presented Dr, Imogene Bentley in a reviow of Sinclair Lewis, bestseller,
CASS TIMBERLANE, Tuesday, Nov. 6. The review was open to the public, and,
as was to be expected, the library auditorium was filled to ovorflowing.
