NTSC MUSIC LIBRARY
(The following is an excerpt from an article which appears in the October,
19h8 issue of News Notes, Bulletin of the Texas Library Association.)
"The Music Library at North Texas State College, Denton, now boasts a col-
lection of 5,000 books on music, 11,500 music scores, sheet music, and music
for orchestra and band, 6,000 phonograph records, and 58 titles on 1,239 reels
of microfilm. 'ith the exception of the phonograph records and the orchestra
and band music, the music collection is housed in a special room in the library
building. The orchestra and band music is shelved in the general stacks. The
record collection is kept in the music building, where four listening rooms are
provided, each equipped with a phonograph machine.,.
"The college bookbindery plays an important part in preparing the music fort
the library shelves. All music that is classed as a music score, as disting-
uished from the sheet music, is bound in a permanent binding. For music with
parts, pockets are provided inside the back cover for the parts. Larger pieces
with many parts are put in special cases made by the bindery,..
"The microfilm collection is notable, . Development of this microfilm
collection has been necessary because original copies were practically unavail-
able, or, if for sale, very expensive. It is estimated that the purchase of
originals would have involved ten times the amount spent on the mlcrofilmo0.
"The Music Library staff is made up of two full-time librarians and three
student assistants. Anna Harriet Heyer is music librarian and Sybil Chambers
joined the staff in September as the full-time assistant music librarian..,"
