'Fission' of Medium Weight Elements

Description: The fission reaction has been observed with high energy accelerator projectiles for elements as light as tantalum but has not been reported for medium weight elements. The present note presents evidence for the occurrence of reactions which are probably most properly described by the term 'fission' and which seem to occur with very small yield throughout the region where this type of reaction is only slightly exoergic or even endoergic with respect to mass balance. In the course of detailed inv… more

Investigation of the Spin and Recovery Characteristics of a 0.057-Scale Model of the Modified Chance Vought XF7U-1 Airplane. TED No. NACA DE 311

Description: "An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel to determine the spin and recovery characteristics of a 0.057-scale model of the modified Chance Vought XF7U-1 airplane. Preliminary investigation of the effect of fences and balancing tabs on the hinge-moment characteristics of a tip control on a 60 degree delta wing at Mach number 1.61

Description: Report presenting an investigation at Mach number 1.61 of the effects of chordwise fences and attached tabs on the hinge-moment characteristics of a half-delta tip control mounted on a 60 degree delta wing. Testing occurred over a range of angles of attack and control deflection. Results indicated that, in general, the effect of fences was to improve the linearity of hinge-moment curves and increase the negative values of slope parameters of hinge moment against control deflection and angle of … more

Reactor Analysis for the Army Package Power Reactor No. 1

Description: Abstract: The reactor analysis of the critical experiment and the APPR-1 resulted in a loading of the APPR-1 of 31.096 gm of B-10 with 22.5 kg U-335. This loading will result in adequate reactivity for a core life of 13 MWYR based on uniform burnup of U-335 and B-10. Calculations indicate that five of the seven control rods provided are more than adequate to shut the reactor down at any time. The temperature coefficient of reactivity should be at least -2 x 10-4 [delta] K/0F.

Strontium Program: Quarterly Summary Report, May 29, 1959

Description: From Abstract: "This report is one of a sequence of quarterly reports, each designed to up-date its predecessor beginning with HASL-42, "Environmental Contamination from Weapon Tests". Herein are presented data which have accrued since HASL-55. Levels of strontinum-90 in fallout, milk, air, water, vegetation, foods, and bone are given, based on data available from February 1, 1959 to May 20, 1959."

On the Particular Integrals of the Prandtl-Busemann Iteration Equations for the Flow of a Compressible Fluid

Description: "The particular integrals of the second-order and third-order Prandtl-Busemann iteration equations for the flow of a compressible fluid are obtained by means of the method in which the complex conjugate variables are utilized as the independent variables of the analysis. The assumption is made that the Prandtl-Glauert solution of the linearized or first-order iteration equation for the two-dimensional flow of a compressible fluid is known. The forms of the particular integrals, derived for subs… more

Production test number 105-634-A in-pile cocked slug tests

Description: Slug ruptures characterized by intergranular corrosion failure of the aluminum can (Hot Spot Ruptures) have been a major cause for loss of reactor production, particularly during the past year. Although the cause for these failures is not definitely known, it is suspected that fuel elements when cocked in the process tube will sufficiently distort the neutron flux and the heat transfer characteristics in a localized area that very high local temperatures will exist and the corrosion rate of the… more
