Ordered S-matrix approach to the topological expansion for baryons and mesons. [Ordered Hilbert space, Reggeon closed loops]

Description: A proposal is made for extending to processes involving baryons the ordered Hilbert space approach to the topological expansion. The proposal is based on a topological classification scheme for baryonic processes that is similar to one used previously for the lowest-order contributions, but is in terms of the minimum number of reggeon closed loops instead of handles.

Improved Monte Carlo method for evaluating multidimensional integrals. [In Algol, PL-I, or FORTRAN for IBM 360/75 (FORTRAN listing included)]

Description: The goal of this work was to develop an improved Monte Carlo method and implement a computer code for performing automatic integration of multidimensional integrals of the form ..integral..f(X)dX over a closed region in k-dimensional Euclidean space, where X is a point in the space and DX = dx/sub 1/dx/sub 2/...dx/sub k/. The scheme is ''automatic'' in the sense that it returns a value for the integral when the user inserts the limits of the integral, a function subroutine for computing f(X), a… more

Postirradiation examination of Peach Bottom fuel test element FTE-4

Description: The report presents the irradiation results and their evaluation for Peach Bottom fuel test element FTE-4. It describes in detail the efforts by General Atomic Company over the last two years to establish a system for extracting meaningful performance information from a fuel test element. This has been done with the goal of making direct comparisons between as-measured data and core design code predictions. Special emphasis has been placed on determining the 95% confidence limits on most of the… more

Instantons and massless fermions in two dimensions

Description: The role of instantons in the breakdown of chiral U(N) symmetry is studied in a two dimensional model. Chiral U(1) is always destroyed by the axial vector anomaly. For N = 2 chiral SU(N) is also spontaneously broken yielding massive fermions and three (decoupled) Goldstone bosons. For N greater than or equal to 3 the fermions remain massless. Realistic four dimensional theories are believed to behave in a similar way but the critical N above which the fermions cease to be massive is not known i… more

Atomic x-ray production by relativistic heavy ions. [Cross sections, K and L shells, ionization 3 and 4. 88 GEV holes]

Description: The interaction of heavy ion projectiles with the electrons of target atoms gives rise to the production, in the target, of K-, L- or higher shell vacancies which are in turn followed by the emission of characteristic x-rays. The calculation of the theoretical value of the K- and L-shells vacancy production cross section was carried out for heavy ion projectiles of any energy. The transverse component of the cross section is calculated for the first time in detail and extensive tables of its nu… more

Description: A new system of three programs written in PL/1 can calculate symmetry and Patterson superposition maps for triclinic, monoclinic, and orthorhombic space groups as well as any space group reducible to one of these three. These programs are based on a system of FORTRAN programs developed at Ames Laboratory, but are more general and have expanded utility, especially with regard to large unit cells. The program PLIGEN calculates a direct access data set, SYMPL1 calculates a direct access symmetry m… more

Negative ion yields from protons and hydrogen atoms backscattered from cesium-coated surfaces

Description: The formation of negative ions by hydrogen collisions on cesium-coated surfaces is discussed in the limiting cases where the resident cesium is either in the purely ionic state or in the purely atomic state. The survival fraction for negative ions moving away from a metal surface is calculated using a method employing complex eigenvalues. The fraction of surviving ions is found to be larger than calculated by previous workers. The secondary emission coefficient for negative ion production by in… more

Distribution of fission products in Peach Bottom HTGR fuel element E14-01

Description: The third in a projected series of six postirradiation examinations of Peach Bottom High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor driver fuel elements is presented. Element E14-01, the subject of the report, was one of the 60 driver elements (out of a total of 804) that contained zirconium boride pellets within a hollow spine. It was also one of the few predimensioned elements, which therefore allowed accurate determination of dimensional change due to irradiation service. The element received an equival… more

Description: A feasibility study has been completed to decontaminate the primary system of the Dresden-1 Nuclear Power Unit operated by Commonwealth Edison Company of Illinois. Available data initially were searched to determine the state of the art. Solvents based on organic acids and chelates gave unsatisfactory deontamination factors or unacceptable corrosion rates when evaluated for cleaning of specimens from the Dresden-1 primary system, under static and dynamic conditions.
