The Absorption and Translocation of Several Fission Elements by Russian Thistle

Description: Abstract: An investigation was conducted to determine the absorption and translocation of fission products by Russian thistle from a localized spot of contaminated soil. The amount and identity of the radioactive elements absorbed and translocated by the Russian thistle is given along with the location of these elements in the plants. Beta radioactivity to the amounts of 10 microcuries per gram caused no visible effects on the growth habits of sectioned material are included.

Use of Commercial Grade Methane in ASP Counting Instruments

Description: The gas commonly used in the chamber of the Simpson Proportional Alpha Counter (ASP) is the high grade, 99% pure methane. The cost of the gas has often raised the question of finding an adequate substitute and a number of substitutions have been attempted. Commercial methane has been substituted successfully for 99% pure methane and its use is recommended in ASP counters. Neither commercial nor technical methane caused any significant changes in instrument operation.

Physical Properties of Neutralized Zirflex Waste

Description: Zirflex cladding waste is to be neutralized to pH 10 before transfer to waste storage tanks. This treatment causes the precipitation of zirconium oxide or hydroxide, which may lead to flow difficulties during transfer. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the physical properties and flow characteristics of the neutralized slurry to assist in the selectin of satisfactory transfer equipment and storage conditions.

100-N Decontamination Facility Design Guide.

Description: Space has been reserved near the southeast corner of the 100-N Area for the 122-N Decontamination Facility. Previous correspondence between Burns and Roe, Inc and General Electric bae discussed various facilities which might be needed in the building. The concepts of the decontamination processes are under active development by research groups at Hanford. At present, there are several workable processes known; each one has one or more fairly serious drawbacks.

Summary Listing of Subcritical Measurements of Heterogenous Water-Uranium lattices Made at Hanford

Description: Exponential and critical approach type measurements have been made to determine the critical mass, material buckling, and in a few cases, the extrapolation length for the lattices. This report attempts to list all measurements on water-uranium heterogenous lattices made to date at Hanford. All lattices were water moderated hexagonal arrays loaded with uranium of enrichments up to 3.15.
