Criticality Calculations for Hydrogen Moderated Reactors From Microscopic Data

Description: From abstract: "The probability for a fission neutron to escape fast leakage from bare, hydrogen moderated reactors is calculated by a method utilizing only the microscopic cross section of the materials. These results can be employed to determine the effectiveness of other substances in preventing fast neutron leakage. These calculations are carried out for aluminum and iron."

Solid State NMR Measurements for Preliminary Lifetime Assessments in gamma-Irradiated and Thermally Aged Siloxane Elastomers

Description: Siloxanes have a wide variety of applications throughout the aerospace industry which take advantage of their exceptional insulating and adhesive properties and general resilience. They also offer a wide range of tailorable engineering properties with changes in composition and filler content. They are, however, subject to degradation in radiatively and thermally harsh environments. We are using solid state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to investigate changes in network and interfacial … more

Reactive Transport Modeling Approach and its Initial Saltcake Dilution Chemical Modeling

Description: During waste retrieval, chemical reactions, waste property changes, and waste movements/mixing interact. Thus,to be accurate, a waste process assessment methodology must account for these physical and chemical waste characteristics and mechanisms. This study provides suggestions for column tests and simulation modeling efforts to investigate saltwell pumping of Hanford Tank S-112. In addition, GMIN chemical modeling was initiated for S-112 saltcake dilution with 50% and 100% water as the first … more

Acceleration amplifications in nif structures subjected to earthquake base motions

Description: NIF technical staff have questioned the possibility of obtaining acceleration amplifications (i.e. amplification of the ground acceleration values) in a structure which are significantly higher than the acceleration amplification exhibited across the period range in the input response spectrum. This note utilizes a simple example to illustrate that the acceleration amplification resulting from the dynamic response of a structural system can indeed be significantly higher than the amplifications… more

Proposed production test for reducing minimum downtime

Description: The object of the production test described in this report is to evaluate the operational aspects of a proposed method for reducing minimum downtime. The excess xenon poisoning, which occurs during the first 32--38 hours after the shutdown of a reactor from present equilibrium levels, will be partially overridden by a central enriched zone whose added reactivity contribution would be compensated during normal operation by means of poison splines.

Monthly, 100 Area technical activities report, Physics, 10-25-45--May 1947

Description: Two events of broad significance occurred in the 100B Area during this report period. These are the discovery of pimpled slugs in high concentration tubes discharged on 10-30-45 and the discovery of leaking VSR thimbles on 11-15-45. Although more extensive reports of these occurrences will be made elsewhere, these events have aspects of significance to physics and basic data will be given in this report for record purposes.

Corrosion fatigue of iron-chromium-nickel alloys: Fracture mechanics and chemistry. Progress report, 1 January 1990--30 November 1990

Description: Peak bare-surface current densities based on the scratched electrode test are seriously in error and repasivation rates grossly overestimated. Influences of potential and pH on reactions of bare surfaces are better understood. Correlation between charge transfer and corrosion fatigue crack growth response was established for Fe18Cr12Ni alloy in deaerated 0.6N NaCl at RT. Strong correlation was established between morphology of corrosion fatigue fracture surfaces and cracking in hydrogen charged… more

Possible causes of accelerated corrosion in the KER 1 loop

Description: The KER-1 Zircaloy process tube extracted from the reactor in May 1960, is currently being examined in Radiometallurgy with particular attention to an area of heavy oxidation and hydriding revealed during a burst test. The area in question is approximately 1 1/4in. wide and extends longitudinally an unknown distance from the points where sections have been taken. The oxide layer of interest is about 8 mils thick at the center, thinning at the edges. The ``oxide`` is quite adherent with only rel… more
