The Uranium Occurrences in the Martha E Prospect, Lawson-Dumont District, Clear Creek County, Colorado

Description: From introduction: The Martha E prospect, in Spring Gulch about three and one-half miles southwest of Idaho Springs, Colo. (fig. 1), is on a claim, originally called the Daisy Freese, which was first prospected by the Stanley Mines. The occurrence of radioactive minerals in the adit was called to the attention of the U. S. Geological Survey in 1950 by the owners of the claim. The Survey's Trace Elements Section Washington Laboratory identified metatorbernite, autunite, and sooty pitchblende.

Progress in Airborne Radioactivity Surveying

Description: From abstract: The objectives in the investigation of airborne radioactivity surveying during fiscal year 1951 were: 1) Establishment of a routine technique of airborne radioactivity surveying -- completed by incorporating those phases of the aeromagnetic surveying technique that were applicable; 2) Development of automatic correction of the radiation measurement for variation in distance from source -- achieved by using the radar altimeter output to modify the output of the counting-rate meter… more

Preliminary Report of Reconnaissance for Uraniferous Granitic Rocks in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and California

Description: From abstract: A reconnaissance to determine the uranium content of granitic rocks in the western states was made during parts of October and November 1951. The paucity of our knowledge of the granitic rocks that are most likely to contain significant quantities of uranium has prevented all but a very general isolation of areas or types of granitic rocks for reconnaissance examination.

The X-Ray Spectra of Polonium Atomic Number 84

Description: From abstract: "Two samples, each containing an estimated 10 curies (2 mg) of polonium-210, were purified by vacuum distillation and evaporated onto oblique sections of X-ray targets made of copper. Four lines of the K series and ten lines of the L series of the X-ray spectrum of polonium were recorded with a one-meter transmission crystal spectrograph and a 25-centimeter Bragg spectrograph, respectively. Measured wavelengths agree approximately with values predicted by extrapolation of Moseley… more

Continuous Solvent Recovery Process Using Pulse Contacting Column

Description: From abstract: "This report presents the progress in the laboratory development of a continuous solvent recovery process for the tributyl phosphate-diluent mixture used in the Purex Process. Investigations were made with 1/2" diameter pulse columns, using a nine foot sodium carbonate contacting column and a four foot water wash column."

Summary of Operating Experience with Decelerating Ion Receivers

Description: From abstract: "The following report presents a summary of operating experience with decelerating receivers for ion beam reception. Sample calculations for design of such a receiver for the isotopes of lithium are presented. Estimates of maximum production and requirements to attain such production are given. The maximum ion beam envisioned is 17 amperes obtained from extrapolation of experimental results."

Production Test No. 105-511-A -- Irradiation of stainless steel samples

Description: This study soughs to determine the x-ray activity of two samples of stainless steel prepared from tubing used in the ANL-140, in-pile experiment (P-13). This information is necessary in order to predict the activity of the P-13 rig at the time of removal. The primary contribution to the over-all activity will be from Ta{sup 181} and Co{sup 59} impurities.

The Mechanism of Carrying Pu(III) on Lanthanum Fluoride

Description: From introduction: "Analytical procedures for the determination of plutonium samples from the extraction and concentration plants utilize the carrying of the hydroxylamine-reduced trivulent plutonium by coprecipitation on lanthanum fluoride. Most other plutonium procedures also take advantage of the efficient carrying on lanthanum fluoride."

Possible water flow rates at DR and H Piles

Description: Estimated water flow rates at H Pile for various postulated conditions are given. The conditions under which the data are valid are as follows: (1) the estimated accuracy of the tube flow rates is {+-}5%, and of pile flow rates {+-}7%; (2) the pile flow rates are based upon the present tube geometry, orifice zone pattern and total flow at H Pile; (3) the flow rates should be increased about 2% if film-free slugs and tubes are considered; and (4) flow rates for enlarged fittings are based upon f… more
