Uranium Cold Extrusion

Description: Several hollow uranium cores of "C" size I & E diameters were fabricated by cold extrusion (550 to 750 F) at Hunter Douglas Aluminum Corporation. Results show diameter control and reproducibility are excellent. Preferred orientation induced by this process is completely removed by a single standard beta heat treatment.

Remote Area Scintillation Monitoring System

Description: This report was written to describe briefly several possible variations of such systems along with probable cost estimates. Previous work has been shown that the application of scintillation detectors is the simplest and most reliable means for such monitoring. By proper detector selection and measuring methods, the system can be of an approximate gamma dose-rate with gamma energy independence above about 100 Kev. The same system using detector change only is directly applicable to beta, gamma,… more

The Influence of Operation on Tuballoy

Description: An attempt is made to estimate the influence of operation upon the mechanical properties of tubealloy. It is to be emphasized that the work is highly speculative, being base upon a set of judicious assumptions regarding the transport material within the metal and should not be used as a substitute for a set of well-planned experiments. The two principal effects considered are the hardening which results from the atomic displacement produced by the fission fragments and the changes in mechanical… more

Determination of Free Nitric Acid in UNH Solutions, Problem Assignment No. 208-X2A, Progress Report

Description: Technical report abstract: Since UNH is a highly dissociated compound which ionizes to NO3 and (UO2), the latter ion being very weakly basic, a solution of pure UNH is quite acid (pH about 3). It is possible to titrate to a phenolphthalein and point with standard caustic solution and obtain a figure which represents the free acid plus the NO3 from the the UNH. However, titration of the free nitric acid alone in such a solution presents quite a problem. By precipitating and removing uranium fro… more

Cross-field injection of a charged, polarized, ion-electron beam

Description: An early idea for fueling a controlled fusion device had been the injection of a polarized mixture of ions and electrons across a magnetic field and into the device. Now, the beam intensity (several kA/cm/sup 2/) required for this technique is available from pulsed ion diodes. Remaining feasibility questions involve beam optics and trapping. The most obvious advantage over neutral-beam injection is avoidance of the need to produce high-energy atoms. Therefore, the technique will compete best at… more

Glass transition temperatures of epoxy resins by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Description: Pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to measure the glass transition temperatures of cured epoxy resins. These measurements make it possible to monitor the cure and determine the glass transition temperature as a function of the curing conditions and the concentration of the components. Knowledge of the glass transition temperature of the cured epoxies allows screening of them for a number of uses, including adhesives and coatings operations.

Precision Micron Hole Drilling using a Frequency Doubled, Diode Pumped Solid State Laser

Description: This work represents the second phase of a program to demonstrate precision laser drilling with minimal Heat Affected Zone. The technique uses a Diode Pumped Solid State Laser with two wavelengths and two modes of operation. The fundamental mode of the DPSSL at 1.06 microns is used to drill a hole with a diameter of a fraction of a millimeter diameter in a millimeter thick substrate quickly, but with low precision. This hole is then machined to precision dimensions using the second harmonic of … more

HIF VNL Progress Report to DOE, April 22, 2005

Description: We have made progress in learning to use the code Hydra to do detailed modeling of targets for Accelerator Driven High Energy Density Physics. Hydra is a state-of-the-art 3D, radiative transfer hydrodynamics modeling code developed at LLNL. In particular, we have carried out two-dimensional simulations of a 23 MeV, 1 mm radius Neon beam striking a 48 micron thick Aluminum foil at 10% solid density, and observed the heating of the foil by the beam. The Bragg peak was chosen to fall near the cent… more

Warm Dense Matter: An Overview

Description: This document provides a summary of the ''LLNL Workshop on Extreme States of Materials: Warm Dense Matter to NIF'' which was held on 20, 21, and 22 February 2002 at the Wente Conference Center in Livermore, CA. The warm dense matter regime, the transitional phase space region between cold material and hot plasma, is presently poorly understood. The drive to understand the nature of matter in this regime is sparking scientific activity worldwide. In addition to pure scientific interest, finite t… more

Chemistry and Materials Science Strategic Plan

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's mission is as clear today as it was in 1952 when the Laboratory was founded--to ensure our country's national security and the safety and reliability of its nuclear deterrent. As a laboratory pursuing applied science in the national interest, we strive to accomplish our mission through excellence in science and technology. We do this while developing and implementing sound and robust business practices in an environment that emphasizes security and ensur… more

Supplement B to production test IP-648-AC evaluation of thorium oxide as a fringe loading

Description: Irradiation of thorium oxide elements of the original test began in January 1964. Twenty columns of thorium oxide elements located in the outermost processing channels of F Reactor, accompanied by 40 columns of enriched, 0.947 w/o U-235, uranium elements in two adjacent lattice unit channels, were charged to permit evaluation of the reactivity effects of the loading and to obtain data on product and contamination build-up rates. Of the two loadings of thoria elements authorized by the initial t… more

Improving reservoir conformance using gelled polymer systems. Sixth quarterly report, December 25, 1993--March 24, 1994

Description: The general objectives are to (1) to identify and develop gelled polymer systems which have potential to improve reservoir conformance of fluid displacement processes, (2) to determine the performance of these systems in bulk and in porous media, and (3) to develop methods to predict the capability of these systems to recover oil from petroleum reservoirs. This work focuses on three types of gel systems - an aqueous polysaccharide (KUSP1) system that gels as a function of pH, the chromium(III)-… more

DWPF recycle stream corrosion tests

Description: Coupon immersion tests were performed on ASTM A537 Class 1 carbon steel in simulated DWPF recycle solutions at 90 {+-} 2{degrees}C, as part of the continuing effort to investigate the formation of shock-sensitive deposits. Coupons were partially immersed for four months in solutions of the same composition used previously at SRTC and at the DuPont Engineering Test Center (a salt solution containing 0.5 M hydroxide and 0.043 M nitrite). Shock-sensitive deposits were not seen on the coupons from … more
