Comparison of Normal Process and Single Process (XC) Uranium

Description: Certain difficulties have been encountered in attempts to substitute a 'one-step' casting process, developed at Iowa State College, for the 'normal' process generally used for the production of extrusion billets. In the 'one-step' process molten metal is delivered from the reduction bomb to the billet mold instead of allowing the metal to solidify in the bomb with subsequent vacuum remelting of the biscuit metal before casting in the billet mold. Routine analyses had failed to establish signifi… more

Spectral Lines of Curium from 3100 A to 4200 A

Description: Fifty-four spectral lines of curium are listed together with estimated intensities. A brief description of the manner of taking the spectra and of measuring the lines is given. Three separate samples of curium, in all seven micrograms, were submitted for spectrochemical analysis. The samples in acidic solution (HCl) were evaporated on copper electrodes and analyzed as outlined for the copper spark method. An Applied Research Laboratories spark source was used. The spectra were taken on a Baird … more

Theoretical analysis of the motions of an aircraft stabilized in roll by a displacement-response, flicker-type automatic pilot

Description: Report presenting a general analysis that allows the rolling motions of an aircraft using a displacement-response, flicker-type automatic pilot to be determined. The system is not ideal for many stabilization problems due to inherent residual oscillations, but it offers a simple and economical solution in situations in which steady state oscillations are not a problem. Results regarding some general remarks, transient and steady states, stabilization boundaries, amplitude equations, and period … more

Tank tests to determine the effect on planing-tail hulls of varying length, width, and plan-form taper of afterbody

Description: Tests were conducted in Langley Tank no. 2 on models of an unconventional flying-boat hull called a planing-tail hull to determine the effects on resistance of varying a number of afterbody parameters. The effects of varying length, width, and plan-form taper of the afterbody are presented. Tests were made with afterbodies of two widths, two lengths, and two tapers. In the tests the depth of step and the angle of afterbody keel were held constant.(author).

Investigation of the NACA 4-(5)(08)-03 and NACA 4-(10)(08)-03 two-blade propellers at forward Mach numbers to 0.725 to determine the effects of camber and compressibility on performance

Description: As part of a general investigation of propellers at high forward speeds, tests of two-blade propellers having the NACA 4-(5)(08)-03 and NACA 4-(10)(08)-03 blade designs were made in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel through a range of blade angle from 20 degrees to 60 degrees for forward Mach numbers from 0.165 to 0.70 to determine the effect of camber and compressibility on propeller characteristics. Results previously reported for similar tests of a two-blade propeller having the NACA 4-(3… more

Stability and Control Data Obtained from First Flight of X-4 Airplane

Description: Memorandum presenting stability and control data from the X-4 airplane during the Northrop conducted acceptance tests. The data were obtained for a center-of-gravity position of about 22 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord. Results of the flight indicated that the airplane is slightly unstable, stick fixed, in gear-up, flaps-up configuration for a center-of-gravity position at 21.4 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord.

Beta M2 Slit Support

Description: A new G slit support utilizing the standard G carbon now in use in all Beta production buildings was tested over approximately four months in the Pilot Plant with very successful results. A considerable saving has been made both in servicing time and in costs. The equipment has proved to be the best of any tried from the standpoint of run terminations due to alignment difficulties.

Analysis of Uranium-Nicked Alloys

Description: Abstract. Methods for determination of both uranium and nickel in solutions of these metals are described. Alloys can be dissolved in nitric acid treated with citric acid to complex the uranium, and the nickel precipitated as nicked dimethylglyoxime. The uranium is reduced and titrated with standard ceric sulfate. These methods are for the determination of macro amounts of uranium and nickel with errors on the order of 0.1%.

Investigation of an Experimental Supersonic Axial-Flow Compressor

Description: An investigation is in progress at the Langley Laboratory of the NACA to explore the possibilities of axial-flow compressors operating with supersonic velocities relative to the blade rows. The first phase of this investigation, a study of supersonic diffusers, has been reported. The second phase, an analysis of supersonic compressors, has also been reported. Preliminary calculations have shown that very high pressure ratios across a stage, together with somewhat increased mass flows, are poss… more

Cyclic Engine Test of Cast Vitallium Turbine Buckets - I

Description: "An investigation was conducted to correlate the engine service performance of cast Vitallium turbine buckets with standard laboratory metallurgical data. Data were obtained from four I-40 turbine wheels of Timken alloy with cast Vitallium buckets. In order to accelerate bucket deterioration, the turbine wheels were subjected to 20-minute cycles consisting of 5 minutes at idle and 15 minutes at rated speed" (p. 1).

Ditching tests of a 1/15-scale model of the Fairchild C-82 airplane

Description: Given here are results of tests made in calm water at various landing attitudes, speeds, and simulated conditions of damage. It was concluded that the best ditching could be made by contacting the water as near the stall angle as possible without losing adequate control. The landing flaps should be full down. If the paratainer hatch and aft-cargo doors fail as expected in a ditching, there will be a large inrush of water into the cargo compartment which makes this location a very hazardous ditc… more

Master-Slave Manipulator

Description: A device for manipulating a pair of tongs behind a shielding barrier has been built and tested. It is called a Master-Slave Manipulator because the slave tongs move in exact correspondence with a master handle. The "slave hands" follow the master hands in complete synchronism. This is the first completely master-slave manipulator known to exist and has proved that this type of manipulation is very successful when the unit is prooperly engineered and built.

Performance of conical jet nozzles in terms of flow and velocity coefficients

Description: Performance characteristics of conical jet nozzles were determined in an investigation covering a range of pressure ratios from 1.0 to 2.8, cone half-angles from 5 degrees to 90 degrees, and outlet-inlet diameter ratios from 0.50 to 0.91. All nozzles investigated had an inlet diameter of 5 inches. The flow coefficients of the conical nozzles investigated were dependent on the cone half-angle, outlet-inlet diameter ratio, and pressure ratio. The velocity coefficients were essentially constant at… more
