A 10 um Resolution Secondary Emission Monitor for Fermilab's Targeting Station

Description: Improvement in focusing the proton beam onto the antiproton production target necessitates the development of a higher resolution beam profile monitor. Two designs for the construction of a multiwire profile mointor grid are presented. The first is a conventional strung and tensioned Ti wire design. The second is a photo etched Ti grid of wires bonded to a ceramic substrate. Both have a central wire spacing of 125 {mu}m. The completed beam profile monitors are designed to operate in a 120 GeV b… more

AFDM: An advanced fluid-dynamics model. Volume 6: EOS-AFDM interface

Description: This volume of the Advanced Fluid-Dynamics Model (AFDM) documents the modeling of the equation of state (EOS) in the code. The authors present an overview of the basic concepts underlying the thermodynamics modeling and resulting EOS, which is a set of relations between the thermodynamic properties of materials. The AFDM code allows for multiphase-multimaterial systems, which they explore in three phase models: two-material solid, two-material liquid, and three-material vapor. They describe and… more

Air ingression calculations for selected plant transients using MELCOR

Description: Two sets of MELCOR calculations have been completed studying the effects of air ingression on the consequences of various severe accident scenarios. One set of calculations analyzed a station blackout with surge line failure prior to vessel breach, starting from nominal operating conditions; the other set of calculations analyzed a station blackout occurring during shutdown (refueling) conditions. Both sets of analyses were for the Surry plant, a three-loop Westinghouse PWR. For both accident s… more

Analysis of femtogram-sized plutonium samples

Description: This report describes a study to determine how well isotopic ratios can be measured for very small samples of plutonium. Resin beads were used to simulate particles; for samples ranging from 5--16 fg, collection efficiencies (ions collected per atom loaded) of 4--9% were obtained. Isotopic ratios with 4% precision and accuracy (240/239) were obtained.

Analysis of the photodiode boundary layer transition indicator

Description: The photodiode transition indicator is a device which has been successfully used to determine the onset of boundary layer transition on numerous hypersonic flight vehicles. The exact source of the electromagnetic radiation detected by the photodiode at transition was not understood. In some cases early saturation of the device occurred, and the device failed to detect transition. Analyses have been performed to determine the source of the radiation producing the photodiode signal. The results o… more

Analysis of the proposed relocation of the neutron criticality clusters in the process buildings for the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant

Description: Radiation levels in Buildings X-326, X-330 and X-333 have been determined for the ANSI minimum accident of concern at both the current and the proposed locations of the criticality alum system neutron detectors. This was performed in order to evaluate whether or not the detectors could be lowered from their current positions and still respond to the minimum accident of concern. Relocating the detectors could reduce the potential for worker in injury when the approximately 90-pound alarms need t… more

Application of laser scattering for detection of surface and subsurface defects in Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} components

Description: Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} ceramics are currently primary materials of choice in structural applications because of their mechanical and thermal properties. However, the lifetimes of these ceramic components -- especially those that experience contact fatigue (e.g., bearings) -- are most affected by defects such as voids, inclusions, or microstructural variations in the surface or near-surface (< 200{mu}m) region. Thus, a technique is desired for the rapid detection and quantification of both surface an… more

Application of multiquadric method for numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations

Description: We have used the multiquadric (MQ) approximation scheme for the solution of elliptic partial differential equations with Dirichlet and/or Neumann boundary conditions. The scheme has the advantage to use the data points in arbitrary locations with an arbitrary ordering. Two dimensional Laplace, Poisson and Biharmonic equations describing the various physical processes, have been taken as the test examples. The agreement is found to be very good between the computed and exact solutions. The metho… more
