Investigation of the aerodynamic and icing characteristics of a recessed fuel cell vent assembly 3: NACA flush-inlet-type vent

Description: An investigation conducted in the icing research tunnel to determine aerodynamic and icing characteristics of two flush-inlet-type fuel cell vent installations. The vent tubes were mounted in two different locations in the two installations. The vents were aerodynamically investigated to obtain vent-tube static-pressure differentials and pressure surveys as a function of tunnel-air velocity and angle of attack.

Empirical mode constants for calculating frequencies of axial-flow compressor blades

Description: The vibration characteristics of a group of axial-flow compressor blades of similar geometry were investigated. Empirical-mode constants were determined for the first three bending and torsional modes. A comparison of experimentally determined frequencies of a second group of blades with frequencies computed using these mode constants showed that the computed values were correct within 10 percent. The approximate limiting ratios of depth to chord and length to chord below which these constants … more

Results Obtained During Accelerated Transonic Tests of the Bell XS-1 Airplane in Flights to a Mach Number of 0.92

Description: Results are presented of tests up to a Mach number of 0.92 at altitudes around 30,000 feet. The data obtained show that the airplane can be flown to this Mach number above 30,000 feet. Longitudinal trim changes have been experienced but the forces involved have been small. The elevator effectiveness decreased about one-half with increase of Mach number from 0.70 to 0.87.

Appreciation and Prediction of Flying Qualities

Description: "The material given in this report summarizes some of the results of recent research that will aid the designers of an airplane in selecting or modifying a configuration to provide satisfactory stability and control characteristics. The requirements of the NACA for satisfactory flying qualities, which specify the important stability and control characteristics of an airplane from the pilot's standpoint, are used as the main topics of the report. A discussion is given of the reasons for the requ… more

[Memorandums on the Subject of Wind Tunnel Measurements of the Henschel Missile "Zitterrochen"]

Description: "At the request of the Henschel Aircraft Works. A. G. Berlin. three models of the missile "Zitterrochen" were investigated at subsonic velocities.(open jet 215-millimeter diameter) and at supersonic velocities (open jet 110 by 130 millimeters) in order to determine the effect of various wing forms on the air forces and moments. Three-component measurements were taken, and one model was also investigated with deflected control plates" (p. 1).

Planing of Watercraft

Description: The present report deals with the processes accompanying the planing of a planing boat or a seaplane on water. The study is largely based upon theoretical investigations; mathematical problems and proofs are not discussed. To analyze theoretical actual planing processes, giving due consideration to all aspects of the problem, is probably not possible. The theories therefore treat various simple limiting cases, which in their entirety give a picture of the planing processes and enable the interp… more
