Orbit averaged radial buildup code for tandem mirror geometry

Description: The radial Fokker-Planck (RFP) model of A. Futch was modified to treat plasma buildup in the tandem mirror plug and center cell with a self-consistent model (TOARBUC). Two major changes have been made to the original version of this code. First, the center cell is treated as having separate electron and ion confining potentials with the ion potential having the opposite sign of that in a conventional mirror. Second, a two-electron-temperature treatment derived by R. Cohen was included in the pr… more

Dispersive effects of transverse magnet displacements in rolled arc achromats

Description: The effect of transverse displacements of combined function magnets is investigated where the disperion in not matched due to roll. This dispersion function is perturbed by displacement of combined function magnets either singly or coherently. In the latter case the effect of a systematic (or DC) offset of magnets is examined. This type of error can occur due to systematics in the placement or the readout of Beam Position Monitors or equivalently by correcting the orbit of a beam of the wrong m… more

D0 Vent Stacks

Description: There are two nitrogen/argon exhaust headers in the D0 cryogenic piping system, one for the liquid argon dewar and another for the three argon calorimeters. These headers serve two functions, venting both nitrogen exhaust from the cooling loops and cold argon gas should any argon vessel blow a relief. These headers are vacuum jacketed until they exit the building. At that point, uninsulated exhaust stacks direct the flow into the atmosphere. This note deals with the these stacks.

F-111 windscreen machining. Final report

Description: Studies were conducted to determine the feasibility of improving the optical image transmitted through a military aircraft windscreen by using single-point diamond turning. Reduced warpage (waviness) of the windscreen surfaces ensures that a more accurate optical image is presented to the aircraft pilot. Machining the acrylic surface was accomplished with slightly impared image transmissibility. The use of this technique as a potential production process is discussed.

Roof-mounted solar-and-wind-powered turbine. Final report

Description: This project was an effort to convert solar energy into electricity by utilizing hot-air convection to turn a turbine. To be considered useful, such a mechanism must generate enough electricity at a cost low enough to be competitive with photovoltaics. The extraction of wind energy incidental to the solar experiment was anticipated. The mechanism constructed generates an amount of electricity so small with respect to its cost that it cannot be considered competitive with photovoltaics.
